Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: April Fool’s Day &  Hill Country Barbecue Food Review. Episode 1

It just so happened that today on April Fool’s Day 2013, I decided I’d do something a little different on a day off.   It’s a fact that most of us New Yorkers are busy rushing to and from work on a daily basis trying to afford the cost of living here, so much so that we seldom get to enjoy the city the way tourists do.  Today I decided to change that and break from routine.

I believe that it is every working person’s  right and obligation to every now and then pamper themselves, to splurge and live a little, even if it can only be done once a month, once a week, or even once a year.  Initially I was going to go down to Battery Park City and get some images but then I thought better of that and  figured I’d hit the HighLine before figuring out what I wanted to eat.

I checked the Weather Channel before heading out and saw that it was reportedly 60 degrees in Central Park.  I saw that by evening it would dip to 47 degrees.  I thought that was no problem as I didn’t plan on being out too late it being a Monday and all. Now then, I head out without an umbrella or a heavy jacket because after the brutality of this past Winter, 60 degrees would most likely feel like 75 degrees to me.

Well folks, I’m here ta tell ya I was played.  I was had, bamboozled, tricked, denied, hoodwinked, snatched, suckered, stolen and just plain ole got.  Ha ha Weather Channel April Fool’s.  The jokes on me.    I get outside in the drab grayness of the afternoon and for a while things seem calm and just gray.  Next thing I know, it suddenly starts to rain and the air becomes wickedly chill far below 60 degrees.

Due to my lack of preparedness for the chillier than expected afternoon, I got myself on a cross town bus versus walking over to the HighLine as I originally intended.

I get off at 14th and 9th and start to walk south towards the Hotel Gansevoort.

By the time I made my way to the HighLine my hands were so frozen I could only hold the camera just long enough to take a quick snapshot of the surrounding environment before having to place them back in my pockets.  This repeated warm and cold dance between my hands and the April Fool’s weather kept up for about 15 minutes.

Up up up the stairs we go until…

Nothing up here reminds me of Spring right now.

Right about here the wind really started to kick up as well as the intermittent drops of rain.  Man I tell ya, let me catch that weather man in the streets.  LOL

At about this point on my tour the wind and rain kicked up enough for me to call it quits for the day and start figuring out what I wanted to eat.  I found an exit stair well nearby before hitting up a Starbucks to get out of the cold and wet for a bit while recharging with an espresso.  After some Starbucks I ran into a few friends who mentioned a great Barbecue place to try called Hill Country Barbecue. After hearing their rave reviews of the “Moist” brisket served there I decided I had my next destination mapped out.  To be continued…

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Dinner at Home – Whole Wheat Fusili and Seafood & Vegetable Cream Sauce

Today I was thinking that I have a lot of pasta I haven’t used yet and could try my hand at making my own cream sauce to boot.  After checking the fridge for what I would need I decided to make a quick stop at the supermarket and pick up some needed items for my Cream Sauce.  Once back from the supermarket I set up the ingredients

Ingredients for my Vegetable Seafood Cream Sauce:

1 pint of Heavy cream

1 half cup Coconut water with pulp

3 tbsp Oregano, 2 tbsp Cayenne Pepper, 1 tsp Black Pepper, 1 tsp Habanero Pepper, Sea Salt

2 finely chopped Garlic Cloves

1/2 Red Onion finely chopped (or whatever onion you have)

1 can Green Peas n Carrots, 1 can Green Peas

3 tbsp All purpose flour

1 1/2 cups shelled deveined uncooked Shrimp

1/2 cup Calamari

3 hard boiled eggs

I poured the heavy cream and coconut water w pulp into a sauce pan or pot with medium low heat.  Next in went the spices and canned peas and carrots before I stirred in the chopped garlic and red onion.  In a small bowl I mixed the 3 tbsp of flour and just enough water to dissolve the flour and have no lumps.  The dissolved flour was then added to the sauce and let simmer.

In a separate skillet I added some canola oil and heated the pan to medium heat.  Once the oil was fast in the pan, I added the Shrimp and Calamari pieces one at a time to the pan and allowed them to cook on both sides before removing and placing on a plate with paper towel to drain excess oil.  I did two styles where I used Panko breadcrumbs and an egg yolk bath to coat some of the Calamari and Shrimp and some I fried without any breadcrumbs just in oil.  Both ways I cooked the shrimp ended up in the cream sauce and were equally delicious.

Next I took the yolks from the 3 Hard Boiled Eggs and sliced them in halves before adding them to the sauce.

After a gentle stir of the Shrimp and Calamari and Egg Yolks into the sauce, I added Sea Salt to taste  as I could tell the coconut water had made the sauce a tad sweeter than I intended.  Once the taste was just right I let it simmer until sufficiently thickened.  The heat was turned down to low.  Next turned my attention to putting a pot of water on to boil before adding the Fusili pasta to it.

I let the Fusili boil for about 8 minutes till al dente then drained them and set them aside while I tended to the cream sauce which was almost done.  Next I grabbed a mixing bowl and whipped together a quick Garden Salad with Mushrooms, Grape Tomatoes, Spinach and Shredded Carrots.  Below is the completion of my efforts.

Dinner is finally served…

Just when I thought I’d take my first bite I realized I wanted to add some Parmesan Cheese and so…

Now for the first bite of Shrimp

I have to say for my first time throwing together a Cream Sauce this turned out to be quite good.  The Cayenne Pepper and Habanero Pepper heightened the flavor and gave the sauce a little kick.  Next time I’ll have to experiment making this using Shrimp stock in the sauce.  Till next time this has been Dinner at Home another report by THEJNSREPORT.

Cannabis

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: CANNABIS  vs BIG PHARMACEUTICALS

Written by T.D Moody

Recently, a situation occurred in which a short discussion on Cannabis was had with a relative.  In that conversation I was told “smoking Cannabis is bad for you”, “that it’s not a good thing”, “It smells”, and “It’s illegal”.  These are some of the typical arguments I hear from older generations who’ve been brainwashed and conditioned to accept and believe the “War on Drugs” propaganda.

First, I’ll ask a few questions here.  Why is Cannabis so hated? Why is it so criticized whereas legal drugs from giant pharmaceuticals barely get any mention despite their laundry list of dangerous side effects (including death) and plethora of class action lawsuits?  I am old enough to remember growing up during the Reagan Era and the War on Drugs Campaign.  “This is your brain on drugs”commercial with the then Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey.  Anyone who hasn’t seen the documentary American Drug War should.   It can be found online most likely on Google video.  A basic search for the documentary will turn it up.   The arguments from back then are still the same today and the lies continue on.

I’m no great historian on Cannabis but from the research I’ve done on my own about this miracle wonder plant, I’ve found in almost every case in which I was told something negative about Cannabis that information was either false or the personal opinions of the person speaking against Cannabis and it’s use.

For a list of the industrial benefits and uses for Hemp check out http://www.azhemp.org/Archive/Package/Uses/uses.html

Also see http://www.drugwarfacts.org/cms/

Personally, I like to get the facts together to support my arguments before I just launch into a scripted list of dislikes which I find most people do.  Information is the key to freeing minds and so I’m going to do my best in dispelling some of the arguments I hear.  One thing I’ll agree with is the fact that when it is burned it does (depending on the strain and aromatic qualities) have a pungent odor.  However, with technological advances almost all odor is eliminated when vaporizing Cannabis versus smoking it.  Also if odor is a major turn off aroma therapy candles and waxes or even a myriad of household sprays can be used to mask odor or an ozone generator which kills odor.

“Long term use of Cannabis is bad for your brain and memory” According to http://www.drugpolicy.org under heading FACT #8 it states”

Marijuana has not been shown to cause long-term cognitive impairment.

The short-term effects of marijuana include immediate, temporary changes in thoughts, perceptions, and information processing. The cognitive process most clearly affected by marijuana is short-term memory. In laboratory studies, subjects under the influence of marijuana have no trouble remembering things they learned previously. However, they display diminished capacity to learn and recall new information. This diminishment only lasts for the duration of the intoxication. There is no convincing evidence that heavy long-term marijuana use permanently impairs memory or other cognitive functions.”

This is just basic information to educate those trapped in the 80’s rhetoric of Politicians then and now.  It never ceases to amaze me how people justify the illegalization of Cannabis despite so much evidence to it’s vast medicinal and industrial benefits.  I personally would much rather a slightly slower paced less frenetic and angry public in the City.  Not to the point of the city being at a stand still in stoned traffic, but where ego, tensions, and attitudes were mellowed by the calm, relaxing vapors Cannabis produces.

One of the most amazing benefits of it’s use I’ve witnessed personally as it pertains to spasticity is undeniable.  Even for myself I’ve had occasion to have muscle spasms in which the pain is unreal and after a few hits of Cannabis the muscles have relaxed and the pains subsided.  That to me doesn’t sound like an evil plant that is going to kill off the world and is a gateway to illicit hard drugs like Meth, and Ecstasy.

I believe people who want to try harder drugs will try them whether they had used Cannabis prior or not.  The so called “Gateway” drug is one of the biggest frauds and scary tales told to keep kids from trying it.  It has the opposite effect intended when lying about something that is so good because what ends up happening is kids are told how bad it is and find out that it’s not and they’ve been lied to.  Now they will tend to believe every other “drug” they were told is bad for them they were lied to about as well and so they may want to experiment with those drugs to see if what they were told was true.

Then socially look at the stigma attached to individuals arrested for simple possession of  a plant.  A PLANT!!!?  Check out the statistics for arrests each year in New York City for Cannabis possession.  Education is critical.

With all that said there still is the elephant in the room that mustn’t be ignored.  That is the fact that early on in the nations beginnings, Cannabis generated more revenue and economy than Tobacco, Cotton, and Alcohol combined.  If there is a product that has that many uses and is a naturally occurring plant and can be grown by any and everyone then there is no Tobacco, Cotton, Alcohol industry to the levels they are today.

The only way I see them being in favor of the legalization of Cannabis for all its potential uses is if those industries (Alcohol, Tobacco, Pharmaceuticals, Cotton, etc) had patents to be the only ones who could grow and/sell Cannabis in all it’s forms and potential products.  It has even been mentioned that Cannabis is a natural cancer cell killer.   Why even call it “Medical Marijuana”?  The argument listed for it being on schedule I was that it has no medicinal benefit.  Another lie told to dissuade the public from even considering  its use.

In addition they can’t patent something that is naturally occurring.  The lobbyists against Cannabis see it as most dangerous to their bottom line should it be made legal.   Freedom for the masses from being locked into a BS healthcare system that’s run for profit and not for the benefit of mankind is also part of the agenda.  And so Cannabis has to be vilified, labeled, propagandized, marginalized, and socially rejected as the epitome of wickedness and the opening of Pandora’s box when in reality the opposite is true.

To this day there hasn’t been one death linked to the smoking or imbibing of Cannabis in any of it’s intake methods.  Not even a single case of an overdose from its use.  The synthetic drugs produced by Big Pharma are created for profit and only serve to make those who take them dependent on them while giving the false impression of actually being helpful and healthful. Meanwhile the same drug companies list or announce their side effects with speed talkers and fine print in their ads.  They gloss over the health risks associated with their FDA approved drugs and then lobby against the legalization of what they know would supplant them.

Carbon Foot Print

Cannabis has a zero carbon foot print as it’s a plant.  Light weight composite materials produced from hemp fiber have been used in building cars that are lighter in weight and eco- friendly.  The seeds are nutrition packed and oils extracted from the hemp can be used for fuel and other products like paper.  Even cement blocks made from hemp fiber in building materials that are far cheaper and more resilient not to mention long lasting.  Remember when the golden era of production was present and consumers could say that brand is a quality brand, you get value for your money.  Nowadays, you here they don’t build em like they used to.  Do you think that’s coincidence or by design?

When I think that all of that waste is 100% unnecessary it only adds to the maddening feeling I have when I think how ridiculous it is that Cannabis is illegal anywhere in the world.    Clearly there are multiple wars being fought for our minds and souls on parallel fronts.  Therefore it is essential that we as the average person learn what they are up against and the arguments of the opposition.  Being proactive in educating ourselves and then acting to fight against the evils that are present and manipulating the institutions and structures of society that govern how we live is the next step.

images

In my mind the center of this whole thing is, are we people who want to benefit mankind?  Or are we people who want to exploit, torture, enslave, and control mankind to the detriment of all?

What’s your opinion on Cannabis?  We’d like to hear from you.

Vino…The Wine list

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: “VINO”  THE REPORT’S WINE LIST

What you see above is one of my favorite Red Wines to sip from time to time either by itself or with a meal.  Bare in mind that I am by no means a wine expert I simply select wines that I like in their taste and finish, sweetness and/or dryness level.

Sitting at home while R&B pulses in the background and a glass full of this smooth Joseph Handler Sweet Red stares at me.  I stare back as it invites me out of the cold of this persistent wintry weather that gives one reason to disbelieve it’s officially Spring 2013.

Simply put, this is an excellent tasting wine in my humble opinion. It can be had any time.  It’s not too sweet, and for myself has the perfect balance of smoothness and fruitiness to it.  This is a must try.  On the back of the bottle it says “produced from the native Dornfelder grape, combines luscious flavors of raspberry  and plum with silky tannins and delicate sweetness. Serve lightly chilled.”  I love that they give all that info right on the bottle and wondered how come more wine producers don’t do this.  An accurate description on the label I think gives the consumer better info and therefore increases the  likelihood  of purchase if you can determine it’s content, and basically what you can expect the experience to be.

My experience with that glass of wine I think says it all.  Good down to the last drop.  You can pick this up for around $7 a bottle at Trader Joe’s.  Excellent and Inexpensive.  Stay tuned for more of Vino…Wine List selections.  Up next Riesling.  As always your selections and or comments are welcome.   Till next time this has been Vino…The Wine List by THEJNSREPORT.

NBA Heat VS Celtics Tonight

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Heat VS Celtics 2013

I want to start off saying I’m not a Celtics fan despite the pic below, I’m actually a long time Bulls fan who currently is also a fan of the OKC Thunder.  I just so happened to have this hat this St. Patrick’s Day weekend and the Celtics play the Heatles at home with a 22 game win streak and bragging rights on the line tonight.

Feeling still in the St. Patty’s Day spirit I’d have some cookies with a little green in em’ I pulled these bad boys out from their hiding place.  Tastes so gooood!!! Pistachio and White Chocolate!! Hawhaaat?!!!

Da Cookies!!! 011

I’m watching the first quarter of the much hyped and anticipated game of the week featuring Lebron, DWade, Bosh and Co. against a depleted Celtics team led by Pierce, Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, and Brandon Bass as the core starting players tonight.

First quarter so far looks like Heat are experiencing the Celtics push being depleted and hating Ray Allen for joining the Heat.  Allen needs to hit his shots and stop thinking about the fan booing him when he touches the ball.  So far his shots look rushed and unconfident.  Jeff Green has been balling something amazing.  Second quarter the Heat are trying to play a bit better but the Jeff Green show is in full effect as he’s the leading scorer and the Celtics offense is running through him.  Let’s see how this one turns out.  I’ll be back later with my post game take.

ST. Patrick’s Day Weekend

Posted by THEJNSREPORT on March 17, 2013
Posted in: Social Commentary. Tagged: St. Patrick's Day. 2 Comments

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: St. Patrick’s Day Weekend!!

I decided to check Wikipedia for my own edification on the origin of St. Patrick’s Day and why people nowadays know it strictly for drinking.  According to Wikipedia: Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early seventeenth century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland),[2] theEastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland,[1] as well as Irish heritage and culture in general.[3] Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.[4] Christians also attend church services[3][5] and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption.[3][4][6][7] Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland,[8] Northern Ireland,[9] Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world; especially in Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

It feels good having learned something.  Well here’s a toast to St. Patrick’s Day with some images I took of the Empire State Building lit up tonight.

Five 5 Napkin Burger Episode

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: The 5 Napkin Burger Episode

The other day I passed by this place in Union Square and remembered seeing it a little while back but never actually stopping by to try the fare.  I’d begun to see a lot of new burger places open and close in the past few years around the city and this joint took over what used to be a corner Deli.  Now transformed into a bar/grill restaurant I like the make over.  Would the experience match the decor?  Let’s find out.  “Never forget you” was pumping through my ears as I approached the entrance.  I wonder if that was foreshadowing.

The entrance

This is the Drink Menu on the table.  Pretty cool I think.  I took a look around and was compelled to snap a couple shots of the interior.

Staring at the ceiling I had a flash back of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” though “Saw6” would do as well.  Take a gander at their black board below.

I’d dub that Tha Shiznit!  Anyway moving right along…my server came to my table after a few moments and brought me a menu.  I perused it briefly before I was asked if I wanted something to drink?  I decided to forego alcohol and settled on their Saranac Ginger Beer.  I told my server I’d need a minute to look over the menu and see what  I wanted to try.

This was not one of the better tasting Ginger Beers I’d had.  It was a bit on the sweet side and generally lacked much fizz or crispness that one would expect with a good Ginger Beer.

Their menu is decent but as far as burgers go lacking in variety when compared to Big Nicks Burger Joint.  I suppose that’s the idea for them to keep it simple with their specialty burgers.  However, when you consider their prices vs say Big Nick’s Burger Joint they have some pretty big shoes to fill as they are in Sumo Burger territory and beyond.

My server had left me now for so long a time I looked around and actually took some more photos of my people watching and still my server was no where in sight.  I looked around the place and as you can see in the photos above it was not busy at all.

I managed to signal another server from across the restaurant and within a moment or two someone else came to take my order.  The guy who took my order explained that my server was busy but he could take my order so …being that it was my first time In Five 5 Napkin I ultimately decided to go with the Original Five 5 Napkin Burger well done and with American Cheese instead of Gruyere.  I added Mac n Cheese as my side seeing as how my burger would come with fries as it damn well should  at $15.95

My original server returned to me after the other server had taken my order and I took the opportunity to add one more thing to my order as I saw that they had the happy hour special of  50 cent wings.  My original server then informed me that I had to be sitting at the bar in order to get them.

I laughed out loud in shock and disbelief  “like really?”  Im thinking to myself who’s the “genius” that decided that?  My server asked if I wanted to sit at the bar to which I said flatly “no”.  I was comfortable with my window seat.  Why should I have to sit at the bar to enjoy wings?

So my server left to take someone else’s order then came back  a little after that and asked me how many wings I’d like.  😉 I figured 6 was the right amount.  When she left again I was presented with the following…

Clearly someone said “We don’t do American Cheese up in herr”!  I gave up as I said to myself you did ask for an “Original Five 5 Napkin Burger well done (with American Cheese) not Gruyere.  Chef said “you’ll eat Gruyere and like it!!”

HAWHAAT!!? Hand cut golden goodness!!!  Uh…Yessum!!!  They could use some ketchup, speaking of which…

Now this is where the tires came to a screeching halt and the sound of brakes squealing could be heard.  This is supposedly an “American Bar and Grill.”  So tell me how do you mess up Mac N Cheese or should I say call shells in cheese soup Mac N Cheese?!!!  How do you do it?!!  Why do you do it?!!  I’m not saying I’m anti shells but come on man?!!

This was blatant false advertising in my book, but you know what, I was hungry and those shells did taste kinda good.  LOL  Even still I say call a spade a spade, call shells shells and dog-gonit call Mac n Cheese, Mac…N Cheese!!

Then came the wings!!!!

When these arrived at the table I wasn’t expecting them.  I mean I was thinking along the lines of plain chicken wings with the option of sauce in a carousel or on the side, but that’s my mistake as I didn’t specify what kind of wings I wanted.  Nevertheless, I gladly partook of these tangy spicy good wings.  The Five 5 Napkin Burger lives up to it’s name as it gets very messy all over you while eating it no matter how careful you are.  Luckily, they give you a good sized real cloth napkin with your utensils.

My first bite in and there was disappointment not necessarily in the taste but in the fact the my burger was under-cooked.  I was irritated now to say the least but not enough to send my burger back to the kitchen as I generally speaking as a rule never send anything back to the kitchen unless it’s so egregious it has to be sent back.

I did find that the caramelized onions were sweet and surprisingly the Gruyere cheese wasn’t bad.  However because of the texture of the melted Gruyere and how soft my burger was in addition to the soft roll it sat on there was no textural contrast for me.  I thought perhaps if it has some crisp lettuce on it that would have made a difference .  It still was a pretty good burger but I wonder now how much better I might have enjoyed it had it been made to my requested specifications.

Overall my experience at Five 5 Napkin Burger was good I’d give it 3 3/4 out of 5 Napkins.   I base this on service, price, taste and presentation.  Presentation gets 5 napkins all the way round in each component of my meal.  Now for the rating of the Original Five 5 Napkin Burger.  The Original Five 5 Napkin Burger gets 3 3/4 out of 5 Napkins.  So far Big Nick’s Black Angus Sumo Burger hold’s the crown alone followed by Big Nick’s Kobe beef burger.

The hand cut fries were good but you’d have a lot better tasting hand cut fries at Five Guys and for a lot less dough.  Fries get 3 1/2 out of 5 napkins.  The Shells and Cheese Soup gets a 3 1/2 out of 5 napkins and the wings get 4 out of 5 napkins.

Once I finished my meal my tab before  tip came to just under $30.  I will be back here again to sample more of their menu and see if my experience improves over my first impression.

Till next time this has been The Five 5 Napkin Burger Episode by THEJNSREPORT.
