The World’s Gone Mad!!! Connecticut Shootings 12/14/12

Written by T.D Moody

Clearly today marks another sad day in history in the lives of many fellow American citizens who like myself heard the heinous news of a lone gunman who murdered his brother, mother, and then a multitude of young children between the ages of 5 and 10.  Sickening doesn’t do justice or describe accurately the feeling I had the moment I saw the news flash across my television screen while by happenstance watching CNN this morning.

I and all of us here at THEJNSREPORT want to express our heart felt condolences to the families of the victims of this awful Friday morning massacre in Connecticut.  As the news develops around this story I want people to first absorb what they can from the horror of the situation and then grieve and say a prayer for the children and adults lost today in a senseless killing spree.

Clearly the perpetrator of this unthinkable, heinous mass murder was not right in his head.  that being said I would hope that most people with common sense will realize that this is not a gun control issue so much as it is the protocol to obtaining guns.  It may sound callous to some but no amount of man-made laws will ever stop violence or acts similar to those we have experienced and heard throughout today.

I am of the mindset that psyche screenings should be done for those wishing to purchase guns legally but that in and of itself won’t deter someone who has lost control of their faculties who has access to weapons capable of mass murder from carrying out such an act.  NY state doesn’t even allow its citizens concealed carry permits or handguns, yet most of the gun crimes committed are not from citizens who legally purchase, own, and operate them.  They come from illegal hand guns.  Guns obtained around and despite the laws on the books.  So what is to be done?  At this point I’m numb with shock and a surreal feeling has come over me.

The world has gone mad.  There is no question we’ve lost the love we had.  People killing people.  It’s evil plain and simple.  These little children who had only just begun to live are taken away from the world and their families.  Only God knows what they could have grown up to become and contribute.  Sadly, we will never get the opportunity to know them and see what they would have become.  I pray the lord watches over their souls and their families.  May all the victims rest in peace.

MTA Etiquette 102

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S MTA Etiquette 102

wallpaper_batman_arkham_asylum_02_1440x900-636859

Recently one  night while on my way home while riding the good old MTA, I happened to be watching an episode unfold in which a bus driver was engaged in an argument with a passenger who didn’t have the fare to ride the bus.  The passenger was giving excuses as to why he didn’t have the money and why the bus driver should let him ride for free.  I sat back observing and listening to the exchange thinking to myself I hope this doesn’t turn out be a live event like the video I’d seen of an incident in Cleveland where a bus driver got into it with a passenger who he eventually punched in the face and threw off the bus.

The gist of the exchange was that this nonpaying rider was trying to justify being a bum and telling the bus operator that the employees of the MTA get to ride for free so why should he care about him not paying the fare.  I thought to myself this idiot is incredulous.  He couldn’t possibly have said what he just said out loud.  Of course it wasn’t a dream it was reality and he in fact was dead serious with his comments.  Now as a fare paying rider I found it stupefying and maddening that our growing youth are becoming more maggot like in attitude and thinking every day.  The bus driver’s voice began to reflect an irritated tone the more this idiot spoke during their exchange.

Now as I stated in the previous MTA Etiquette 101.  I believe wholeheartedly that if you don’t have the money to pay the fare for the bus you should walk or borrow the $2.25 to ride period.  I find it highly offensive and disgusting when freeloaders are allowed to ride for free at the expense of the fare paying riding public.  Especially when they can display cell phones and expensive Beats by Dre headphones (which retail for over $300) but not the requisite $2.25 to get where they are going.

The bus operator expressed this exact sentiment to this particular freeloader.  After hearing the guy make a remark to the effect of it’s not costing you anything to let me ride what’s the big deal?  The operator said “Ain’t nothing free!  You really believe what you’re saying?!  Ain’t nothing free!!  How about the people who pay the fare to ride?  Because of people like you they have to pay more to use the bus and train because people like you feel that you shouldn’t pay your fare!At that moment I’m both thinking it and saying it out loud to myself, every time there’s a fare hike on the MTA it’s because of these free loading maggots.

I happen to ride the MTA almost everyday like most NYC residents or commuters and any extra money that has to come out of my pocket is an unwanted event, especially when you consider the fact that this is preventable if others were responsible, unselfish fare paying riders.  It seems like every year or two the MTA proposes a fare hike and this monster has no designs on slowing down.  The working class must galvanize to fight this unfairness.  The problem most definitely has its roots in MTA employees allowing free-loaders and not enforcing fare collection as well as corruption (misappropriation of revenue or waste) which we all know is rampant in any civil or government agency.  How can they justify increasingly crowded trains and buses and increasing fares without showing us the fare paying public why these increases are so frequent and what they are doing to combat the problem?

In my opinion it seems like everyone turns a blind eye to the situation and says let the working class pay for everything.  Wages are not on the rise to match the increasing costs of living.  This speaks to a larger part of the decay in the values and character that was once an asset and credit to this country the U.S.A.  Hardworking people still do make this economy go but the sad reality is there are far too many spoiled, lazy, selfish people who unfortunately as Romney stated feel themselves to be victims and don’t want to do anything to help themselves but rather would prefer the state and others who are pulling their own weight and more to care for them.

Once the loser got off the bus and it was just myself and the bus operator alone.  I spoke to the bus operator on the subject and he in effect told me that it’s gonna take a mass effort of us fare paying riders to organize and boycott the MTA like back in the civil rights era in order to effect some change in the MTA managements approach to increasing fares on the working class riding public.  I mean it’s bad enough that you can’t go one stop hardly without someone coming through a train car begging for change or disturbing you with drum playing or some sob story.  It’s reality but it doesn’t have to be is the point.

I for one plan to attend the next public hearing scheduled on a proposed fare hike and will express my opinion to the MTA management because if things keep going the way they are something will have to give.  There is a threshold for what consumers will put up with but I believe until people wake up, speak up and educate others around them about what’s happening, this sad, financial and emotional drain will continue.

Lastly, I will point out that I’ve seen some of the most selfish behavior exhibited by some of these freeloaders once they’ve been allowed to ride for free.  On numerous occasions I’ve personally witnessed where they will sit in a double seat, take the aisle seat and position themselves and their faces with a look to say these seats belong to me and how dare anyone else think of trying to sit next to me.  I mean really!!!?  You receive an act of kindness and generosity and pay that forward with selfishness and greed.  Mankind we have so much work to do.  I’m starting with myself, because I know one can not live by meat and bread alone as it says in the bible.  What has happened to morals and character?  Why is it acceptable to be a douche bag parasite on society?

Why are the youth of this country the way they are today? As the freeloader was preparing to get off the bus I yelled out “Get a job!!”  I had to do it so do you!!  I don’t care if it’s McDonald’s or the supermarket do something!!  The bus operator said to me “Who wants to work anymore?  Who wants to do anything anymore?  You look around and people don’t want to do nothing but they want to get paid huge.”   I fear soon, the way things look, this country will be known as America the Fallen.  Feel free to comment and give your two cents on this subject.

THEJNSREPORT’S:FOOD Semi-Homemade

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S Food at home: Cooking and Eating Semi-Homemade

Every now and then from time to time, one needs to refrain from the so easy to go for take out urge.  I’m sure there are many valid reasons for doing so.  For myself, usually that means I’m sick of eating take out by the time I feel inclined to cook at home versus ordering out.  On a day I say to myself I’m gonna cook I usually decide to cook something that doesn’t require a lot of time to prepare and is relatively easy to make.  Ladies and gentlemen, if you guessed pizza you are…wrong but not far off.

My Five Alarm Egg Noodles and Turkey Meat Sauce.

My Five Alarm Egg Noodles and Turkey Meat Sauce.

A classic meal I love to eat is spaghetti and meatballs.  For the purposes of this post I title it Semi Homemade because while my delicious meal was prepared at home by myself, I didn’t make my own tomato sauce or pasta from scratch.  Both are store bought products.  That being said I altered the store bought tomato sauce by adding some other herbs and spices to it and adding home cooked ground turkey instead of beef to it.  I chose egg noodles over traditional spaghetti this time around as I like how healthy egg noodles are and the fact that they are broad curly noodles similar to those found in Spice Restaurants Black Noodle dish.

I used lots of pepper in my sauce as I really like my pasta spicy.  Cayenne, Crushed Red Pepper, Black Pepper, and Habanero Pepper, and a small amount of a yogurt based  green pepper sauce I bought from an Indian food restaurant.  All were added to the sauce along with some extra Oregano.  The ground turkey was seasoned lightly with a little Adobo and Sea Salt.  I let the ground turkey (lean 97% fat free) cook for a little while in a pot with a little extra virgin olive oil, fresh sliced garlic, and white onions before adding it to the spiced up tomato sauce I had simmering.  After letting the sauce simmer with the newly added ground turkey for about 20 minutes, I turned my attention to the egg noodles.  Egg Noodles cook in no time (about 8 minutes) so most of the prep time for my meal went towards the sauce.

Once I drained my boiled noodles I rinsed them with cold water for 20 seconds before adding them to the simmering meat sauce.

A marriage has just taken place. See the evidence.

A marriage has just taken place. See the evidence.

What a beautiful union. Can you see the heat permeating throughout?!

What a beautiful union. Can you see the heat permeating throughout?!

I let the sauce and pasta bubble on low heat for another 5 minutes before breaking out a bowl and dishing up.  Not to toot my own horn but this dish was so good I had to have a second helping and while I’m sure many would avoid the extra carbohydrates I splurged on a second helping with a piece of Roti under the pasta and sauce.  I mean even when one goes out to eat at restaurants, usually bread is offered so I see no big deal here.

Five Alarm Pasta N Ground Turkey Meat Sauce with Roti. Uh Yassum!!!!

Five Alarm Pasta N Ground Turkey Meat Sauce with Roti. Uh Yassum!!!!

Now here’s the kicker if I were to have ordered this dish in a restaurant in the city it would probably cost me somewhere around $12 to $16 depending on the restaurant.  All totaled this dish cost me $8 between the package of Egg Noodles, Tomato Sauce, and Ground Turkey.  I know exactly what’s in my meal and I’m saving money as most of us need to during these tough economic times.  And understand I had more than one helping.  So in effect that pot can feed 6 to 8 people.  So for argument sake let’s say 6 people can be fed from what I prepared.  At $12 to $16 dollars a person in a restaurant, I’ve saved anywhere from $72 to $96.  Eating good and saving money is always a win win in my book.  Food for thought.

Real Heroes

Posted by THEJNSREPORT on December 11, 2012

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S Real heroes, A Reflection of Society’s perception of what makes a hero.

Written by T.D. Moody

As I sat with my stomach stuffed sufficiently enough to require rest, I began to reflect on the subject of heroes, and heroism and in my mind what constitutes a real hero. When I think about all the advertisements and commercials of the newest face to enter the ranks of celebrity and professional athlete, I can’t help but wonder why we as a society worship these people incessantly? I don’t begrudge the celebrity or pro athlete their fame or fortune but I do wonder about the average everyday hardworking person or a disabled person who despite their disability or job is a productive, selfless, giving and beautiful soul and example to all of us who are fully healthy and capable.

I think one of the most underrated and overlooked aspects of humanity is the will and ability to overcome challenges. Maybe that is ultimately the meaning of life. To live, to experience, to learn, to grow, and to overcome whatever obstacles come one’s way. Having a character that exemplifies the highest standards of humanity which is to give back to society, to love each other and not hate or envy one another.

I have a friend who suffers with the disease Multiple Sclerosis, a heinous and debilitating auto-immune disease. I found myself amazed to hear how active she was despite her struggles to walk and generally have the every day energy to be active.  Her amazing uplifting and positive never give up spirit is what impresses me the most and makes me see her as a real hero.  The horror stories she’s told me about in which she’s had to endure some of the most absurd episodes I’ve ever heard of simply because this disease has in some aspects forced her to deal with an inefficient health care system here in the U.S, which is still by far considered the best in the world.

It comes down to services and having to depend on others to do things she can’t do simply because she doesn’t have either the energy or the ability/ or both to do what she is requesting of someone who gets paid to assist her on a daily basis.  In my opinion she is a real hero not these pro athletes and actors or celebrities people hold up as the standard to aspire to be and worship.  That is the illusion, that is the Hollywood facade.

Posers

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: POSERS A look at how we as human beings treat one another based on appearance.

Written by T.D Moody

Often times in life one comes across an experience seemingly so surreal they can’t believe it’s happening.  Life playing out like in the movies.  Is it really life imitating art or art imitating life?

Recently a friend relayed one such experience that she encountered out with some girlfriends of hers where at a lounge, a good friend of hers who was visiting from out of town brought along her uptight boss to hang out with them.  I thought to myself she must have felt it necessary for job security or something to really hang out with her boss in her down time.  She continued to say that it just so happened that her friends boss was celebrating his birthday that night so the pieces fell into place.  As a kind gesture my friend offered to buy a birthday shot for her friends boss to which the boss sneered and looked her up and down before saying “My friend owns this lounge”.  She continued to say that’s great but still I’d like to buy you a shot, so what kind of shot would you like?  She says he looked her up and down again and then said Grey Goose and walked away from her.  To which I said Wow!!  He sounds pompous.  At that moment my friend says her friend standing right there having just heard the exchange tried to diffuse the situation by making an excuse for her boss that he was just a little drunk.

She however, would hear none of it and decided she out of principal would buy the shot to let her friend’s boss know that she not only could afford to buy top shelf but that she had the class to follow through on her word.  I stopped her at this point of her story to ask a question or two.  I began by saying before I ask what you did next?  I want to know the name of the lounge and what was the scene like?  To which my friend replied the name of the lounge wasn’t important and that the crowd was mixed.  Continuing her story she says that the boss was surprised when she actually came towards him offering the shot of Grey Goose and toasting him with one of her own.

She then went back towards her girlfriends and ignored her friend’s boss for the rest of the night.  At which point her friend accused her of doing what she had done out of pride.  I could see that as a possibility but my friends argument was that if it was pride and she actually couldn’t afford to buy the shots then it would simply be a matter of pride.  Her argument was she had the money to do what she did and show this guy that his attitude not only was disrespectful to her as a woman but also because he presumed that she couldn’t without knowing a thing about her.   She then said that in her mind that whole exchange was how she’d expect someone to act towards a poser.  Someone who acts as if they have more means than they do in order to impress.   I thought about what she was saying and it made sense.

I thought about how often I had seen people who clearly were out of their element drinking in clubs or bars and not have any money to buy their own drinks or tip when served.  So this led me to ask my friend something that came to mind.  Often times we as people look at and judge others on the way they look outwardly.  We do make assumptions about people based on how they dress and carry themselves.  So my next question to my friend was how were you dressed?  His attitude could have been based largely on his assumptions he may have made about you based on how you were dressed.

Her response was “It doesn’t matter how I was dressed.  I could have been wearing overalls if I wanted to and that would still give him no right to talk to me that way or assume that I couldn’t afford top shelf.”  Just so happens my friend has a good job and makes really good money so for her it was the thought that this guy had that she couldn’t possibly have the means to buy what she offered and her reply would be to prove him wrong.

I had to admit her point made sense and was definitely the classy thing to do versus say throwing a drink in the jerk’s face.

Fall Food Review : Spice Edition!!!

Posted by THEJNSREPORT on November 23, 2012
Posted in: Food & Drinks. Tagged: Food Review, Must Eats, Spice, Thai Food. Leave a comment

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S Fall Food Review 2012: Spice Edition!!!

Post Hurricane Sandy and the Noreaster we just witnessed I decided to treat myself to a Thai dinner and thought of none other than Spice.  Spice has several locations throughout the city.  Two are clustered in Chelsea on 8th ave and another lone location is in Union Square.  No matter which location you go to the food is the same which in my opinion is a very good thing.  I decided to go with a sampling of the appetizer menu and then a main course.

The Appetizers

We’ll begin with the Curry Puffs, followed by the Golden Fritters, then Fresh Summer Rolls, chased and topped off with Fried Calamari and a lime to cleanse the palate.

The Appetizer Spread

The Curry Puffs

The Curry Puffs say Chuuch!!!

The Curry Puffs I actually dove into first just because their flaky pastry shell looked so deliciously golden I had to see what they were like.  First off I have to say these Curry Puffs are the bomb if for nothing else than their flaky pastry shell on it’s own.  The inside is filled with potato and peas and curry pureed together with some spices.  The overall experience is amazingly good.  The sauce provided is sweet and compliments the puffs but I think they are good enough to eat on their own.  There is a sweet after taste that lingers on the tongue after each bite.  I would put it on par if not slightly above some Indian Samosa’s I’ve had in the past.

Hallelujah!!! This here is wisdom.

After this bite I had immediate understanding.  The genius of the combination puff pastry with curry puree’ is beyond smart!!! If I had known they were going to taste as amazing as they did, I would have ordered at least two more orders of this delicious appetizers.

Golden Fritters

Um, Yassum!!!

The challenge includes use of chopsticks.  My tools.  I look at them like bamboo staffs for adroit hands. Bow to your competition and…BEGIN!!

Fried Calamari

Hawhaat?!!! I need it, have to taste it.

Now for the honest review of the Fried Calamari.  Overall they were fried to golden perfection and had that expected lightly greasy goodness to them.  They were light and bursting with flavor into your mouth.  However, the salt content in these bad boys were just too much for me to ignore.  I otherwise found them very enjoyable.  The tang of the sauce that accompanied the saltiness in the calamari only compounded the thought that eating all of these would give me high blood pressure or a massive migraine.  I have to say in this appetizer Spice dropped the ball or the entire salt shaker into the batter.  Not good.

Summer Rolls

Um absolutely NOT what I wanted to taste again after the first bite sans sauce or with sauce.

These summer rolls were given to me in my order I believe by error of the server who took my order as I wanted Spring rolls and not summer rolls I was expecting fried goodness wrapped with the skill of a master chef and what I received were these Caterpillar like cocoons of wrapped raw vegetables that were bland and actually almost cause me to vomit after the first bite had been down all of a minute.  I don’t know if that’s a sign that I tend to prefer my foods (when I have a pig out day) to be fried verses raw.  It really is a shock to the system.  So maybe I’m a bit prejudiced against the summer rolls but I feel in my honest opinion they were awful.

The Main Course

Behold the impressive and out right winner in my opinion of favorite plain yet amazing dish. The Black Noodles with Chicken (Spicy).  :p

For my entree after piquing my appetite with the appetizers I approached my Black Noodles and Chicken.  Generally speaking I tend to like my dishes with some heat to them.  So ordering Thai food I wanted to taste my favorite noodle dish with crushed red pepper.  On the heat index I like mild heat to making you sweat and your nose run kind of spice.  The crushed red pepper has a distinct flavor and heat that just marries well when combined with sugar like the sugar in the sauce that the black noodles are drenched in.

From Above. Behold perfection.

Knowing what I know now about the awesome wonder that is the Black Noodles and Chicken (Spicy) anything can be dealt with once the first bite of this dish hits your mouth including the over salted Fried Calamari and the underwhelming if not nauseating Summer Rolls.  Do you see it?  Can you understand it?  As they say seeing is believing, but I say while the candy for the eye is a sight to behold, tangible taste that either sublimely matches or surpasses the appearance of the dish is what it’s all about.  The experience.  The opposite is true if the taste of the dish lacks in comparison to it’s presentation and appearance.  That being said, this dish has the perfect balance of flavors between the perfectly cooked slices of chicken and vegetables interwoven between broad rice noodles cooked in a sweet dark sauce and topped off with crushed red pepper.  As I said previously.  Behold perfection.

This in my opinion is the best noodle dish I’ve had to date and will always have as an “Ace in the hole” go to as an entree.  So in sum Spice has a very worthy array of food offerings that can serve as great comfort foods and simple yet sophisticated master pieces of culinary art such as The Black Noodles with Chicken (Spicy).  Till next time this has been Fall Food Review: Spice Edition by THEJNSREPORT.
