Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S WILDWOOD BBQ Food Travel Log 2013

After a semi stressful day at work I decided I wanted some BBQ and being near Union Square area I remembered there were two BBQ places nearby that I’d tried.  One is Brother Jimmy’s BBQ and the other is WildWood.  I’d remembered WildWood from early last year when I had gotten an order to go.  I unfortunately wasn’t able to review it at that time and so with out further ado.  Here we go.  WildWood is located on 20th St. and Park ave.

WildWood BBQ

I arrived at WildWood a little after 10pm and was greeted before being seated.  The first table I was shown was a bit too boxed in for my taste so I requested and was granted seating towards the rear of the establishment.  I received the Menu and looked it over for a few minutes before completely settling in on what I wanted.  When I looked up my server was nowhere to be seen.

I sat patiently as minute after agonizing minute ticked away before I made eye contact with a floor manager who then got my server’s attention and she arrived to take my order.   I looked around the joint and it was pretty full throughout so I gave my server the benefit of the doubt that she was busy and got to me as soon as she could.  I decided to splurge a little and so this was what I ordered.  Appetizer, Main Course, 2 sides, and a glass of Seltzer.

The appetizer

 Rub Wings

If you guessed wings…you are partially correct.  But these wings are unique in that they have a spice rub on them that is something to experience trust me!!!

The wings were savored tender bites that had hints of sweet cinnamon in the rub used on them.  It was a shame that for $10.50 you only get six of these.  I mean it is chicken.  Cmon’ Man!!! LOL  Anyway, once the wings were learned then understood, I looked up for my server in anticipation of ladies and gentlemen…The Main Event!!! In a word…Yassum!!!!  It came to me with a quiet announcement from a server.  “Excuse me, ribs, mac n cheese, and mashed potato.”  I placed my sides above unaware that I had inadvertently made the meal look like a smiley face.

The Main Event

The Main Event and Sides

Is this the beginning of wisdom or what?  A full rack of Memphis style rubbed baby back ribs!!!!!  I don’t eat a lot of pork often but when it’s done right like this.  It’s a must.

The Full Rack

Before deciding to order the full rack, I’d asked my server if she knew how many ribs were in a half rack.  To my dismay she didn’t know but used her hands to give an approximate size of what would be a half rack.  Unconvinced I decided better not chance it.  These amazingly presented ribs looked like my personal little meat xylophone.

I used my knife to separate a portion of ribs to sample my first bites of this rack of happiness.  The ribs were cooked reasonably well but weren’t as fall off the bone tender as Dinosaur BBQ.  Still I dove into another section of ribs before sampling first taste fork fulls of a wondrous creation of aged cheddar mac n cheese with breadcrumb topping.  I chased those bites of mac n cheese with buttery mashed potatoes that reminded of my days in day care where the food was cooked so well.  Like home cooked food with love.

After finishing the first half of the rack I decided to sample the carousel of sauces WildWood has on every table.  I tried the Voodoo sauce which was bla in my opinion.  It definitely didn’t knock my socks off.  I tried two more sauces before going in with what you see on the plate above.  Hotter Hot Sauce people!!!  Those few concentrated drops collected in that benign looking pool is nothing to be trifled with.  Initially, I liked the kick of flavor I experienced as it helped propel me through another section of ribs.  Then all of a sudden the realization of this sauce’s after burn after taste had me sipping extended sips of seltzer and sucking ice cubes to no avail to lessen the stinging and increasing burn from this sauce.  Do not underestimate this sauce.

Front Half

I tried some more of the sweeter BBQ sauces to lessen the sting that remained lingering on my tongue.  It lessened after awhile but I wasn’t chancing any more burning.  I abstained from any more Hotter Hot Sauce after that.

What Mac N Cheese?!!!  This is by far the best Mac N Cheese I’ve had in a long time.  The only other one I think that comes close is one I had over thanksgiving at a relatives home several years back.  The taste was exceptional and the breadcrumbs just took it over the top.

I will definitely be coming back for more Wild Wood BBQ Aged Cheddar Mac N Cheese!!!!!   After a few sips of seltzer water to cleanse my palate I refocused my attention on the rack.  The following is what transpired.

I didn’t finish the mashed potatoes as the Wings, Ribs and Mac N Cheese had me completely satiated.  After sitting a while in order to let my stomach settle and begin to digest, I snapped a quick picture of the mood inside.  The lighting is purposely this dark inside WildWood.

WildWood BBQ Interior (Night)

There is a huge Bar in Wild Wood and HDTV’s all around showing all manner of sports events currently on.  As for the lighting I actually liked that it was this dark inside.  All in all my meal not including any real soda, or alcohol, or juice, came in at just over $54 not including tip.  I was certainly well pleased with my meal even if the start of my stay at WildWood wasn’t as seamless as I would have liked.  I thanked my server and was congratulated on finishing what I started notwithstanding the remainder of the mashed potatoes.  WildWood will definitely be on the repeat visits list for BBQ in the city.  Check this place out.

Alcohol and It’s Universe

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Alcohol and It’s Universe

Drinks

I imagine for most alcohol consumers having an occasional cocktail is a routine part of a social interaction for decompressing amongst friends and strangers alike during or at the end of the work week.  Personally, I didn’t really start to consume alcoholic beverages even semi regularly until my junior year of College.  Now well over a decade removed from graduation I find it fascinating to discover all the the nuances there are within the realm of alcohol.  The alcohol universe is vast.  From beer to hard liquor to cordials to light whimsical cocktails for even the most discerning palates.  There’s always something new to learn and discover.  All that being said…

A night out and about

One of the biggest peeves of mine when out for a few drinks with friends is having to wait behind a bar novice(s) or inconsiderate patrons who are so absorbed in themselves and/or flirting with the bartender or chatting with their friends that they forget there are other customers who are also trying to get to the bar to order drinks as well.  In my experience I’ve found that sober this isn’t and shouldn’t be a hard concept to understand.  Get your drink and get outta the way.  I suppose I should realize that not everyone is sober there duh!!! LOL

Even still, I’ve seen  it where a “sober” customer who also had been waiting a while to get served received his/her drink order they decided to plant themselves in the same spot impeding other customers from getting to the bar to order as if they were the only people in the bar.  It’s sad and ridiculous bar etiquette that can and often does lead to fights.  For me if a place is too busy and it’s a long wait I usually head else where  to get service much quicker.  The pace of the city is not exempt in bars.

In other news, while doing some basic research for my own information I found this bit of info online.  An average shot of vodka has approximately 100 calories in it at 80 proof or 40% alcohol.  Suppose you were to have at least 3 shots of hard liquor at that proof.  That’s 300 calories right there give or take a few.   If your having a mixed drink usually a decent drink has 2 oz of alcohol in it plus whatever mixer you add so you could be consuming upwards of at least 200 calories or more calories per drink.

If you consider that probably more than one will be had during the course of a night out it’s logic to do the math and add the calories up.  See that you can easily drink yourself fat if consuming with no moderation in mind.  Of course I believe in the the “Drink Responsibly” ads.  The average bottled beer is 4% – 6% alcohol and depending on who is making it between 65 to 95 calories a bottle.  However, there are beers that have been brewed with strengths upwards of 40% alcohol.  You can find more historical information on alcohol production as well as facts at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer.

The firing squad lined up

The firing squad lined up

As a personal preference I tend to prefer mixed drinks or a cocktail over beer but have had my share of decent to good beers too.  Blue Moon and other wheat ales are a go to for me when I decide to forego cocktails or shots of hard liquor.

I’m sure a lot of us have had the unpleasant experiences of bad hangovers.  I have had my share as well, so that now bit older a bit wiser I know when to say when.  This is probably the single biggest reason I think that some people prefer to have beer instead of shots because they can probably gauge their buzz or “intoxication” better with beer than they could a shot.  I know this to be true especially if having more than one shot is a high probability throughout the night.

For the same reason I prefer the concentration of alcohol better in mixed drinks or shots to beer, drinking water in between drinks or shots is an invaluable practice that all if not most alcohol consumers should engage in.  Alcohol consumption dehydrates you  therefore you need A) to have water in your system to flush the alcohol being processed by one’s liver and kidneys.  B) To help sober you up and/or at the very least slow down a “buzz”.

Agua

From Vodka to Gin to Tequila to Bourbon, Scotch, and Rum, I’ve sampled quite a bit of alcohol and come across many variations and names for drink combinations that I’ve never heard of but eventually managed to either make on my own or order while out.  Here are just a few of my go to favorites and in no particular order: The Skittle Bomb, Fireball Sour shots, Washington Apple shot, Lemon Drop shot, Platinum Margarita, Cadillac Margarita, Dark and Stormy, and Colorado Bulldog.

The Skittle Bomb consists of 1/2 oz of Stoli Ohranj, 1/2 oz of Stoli, Raspberri, 1/2 oz of  Skyy Citrus 1/2 Stoli Bluberri Fill a pint glass a quarter full with Smirnoff Ice or Mike’s Hard Lemonade and pour the 2 oz shot into it and drink all at once.  Tastes like Skittles!!!!  Fireball Whiskey with a splash of sour mix tastes like red hots with a tangy sour.  The Dark and Stormy is Bacardi Dark Rum and Ginger Beer mixed together over ice.

The Colorado Bulldog is a once in a blue for me as I generally don’t like to mix cream or milk with alcohol.  The Colorado Bulldog is Vodka, Kahlua, Bailey’s, and a splash of coke.  The Lemon Drop is Citrus Vodka chilled with a squeeze of lemon juice and served in a sugar frosted shot glass. This is an excellent shot in my opinion.   Lastly, the Washington Apple consists of  Crown Royal, Sour Apple Pucker, Cranberry Juice, and optionally a splash of Sprite or 7up.  This can be made as a cocktail or shot.  Either way it’s a great go to shot.

Justine Restaurant Food Review 2013

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Justine Restaurant Food Review 2013

Awe Sooky sooky now!! In my last Review I encountered Polash Indian Cuisine!! This time around my palate suggested I go with Spanish cuisine.  My sister told me of a pretty good Spanish Food restaurant in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium.  The name of the place is Justine Restaurant.  Justine is located at the corner of 167th St and River Ave in the Bronx just under the 4 train.   Slightly miffed that I dared question her as to whether she knew of good Spanish food places in the area my sister asked “You don’t trust me?”

How wrong I was to have ever doubted her.  I decided to grab a menu and get the food order to go especially as per their to go menu, if you wish to dine in it’s an extra $5 added to your check.  Always busy and on the go I decided it was nice inside but not enough to warrant paying to eat in.  Take a look at the menu.

No lie, no sooner than I’d stepped to the counter to order, did a steady stream of customers begin pouring into this place.  At that moment I realized Justine had to be good for customers to be flocking here especially with their slightly high prices in my opinion.  However, I’ll let you be the judge.

Their Menu

Their Menu

Justine Restaurant Food blog Pics

Justine Restaurant Food blog PicsIn any event after having looked over their menu and seeing that they offered one of my favorite combinations I went with the following…

Chicharron de Pollo sin Hueso

Chicharron de Pollo sin Hueso

Chicharon de Pollo sin Hueso means for those of you who are not Spanish speaking or literate, Fried chunks of chicken without bones.  It gets better.   I realized I had been given an abundance of limes with my order and then it happened… Out came the utensils and Hot Sauce!!!

This is what you call "The question."

This is what you call “The question.”

Yes Lord!!!!!!!!!

Yes Lord!!!!!!!!!

After a few gentle squeezes of fresh lime onto some of the chicken chunks I went to work with my tools.

Justine Restaurant Food blog Pics

See what I saw.  I saw that someone knows and cares about what they’re doing.  Without question I got my money’s worth folks.

My tools

My tools

We’ll begin with the arroz amarilla con habichuelas.  Generally speaking, as a person of simple tastes I like simple dishes done but done well.  Rice and beans is an always welcome basic food combination in my house let alone gullet.  Justine does rice and beans very well.  The rice was perfectly seasoned and cooked full of flavor and taste yet not salty which for me is essential.  When and if I desired more of an acidic taste I merely picked up a piece of lime wedge and squeezed some lime juice onto my meal.  Mmmmm mmmmm!!!! Me entiendes?!!!!

The Chicken was perfectly seasoned, lightly floured, and fried to a glorious light golden brown.  A few bites full without hot sauce allowed me to appreciate the chunks on their own before the supplied hot sauce was lightly drizzled on and around the chicken.  The hot sauce was ok.  I’d say not as bad or watered down as say Chinese food restaurant hot sauce, but no where near as good as say from a quality bottle brand.

I spoke to the Chicharron and it spoke back.  I started to answer the question. And the question continued tantalizing me with it’s tight juicy chunks.   I looked on a little while longer before laying waste to an excellent meal.    The marriage between the chicken chunks, the limes, the rice and beans and the hot sauce was awesome and delicious and required almost no sips of a beverage to wash down while I ate.

If you’re ever in the Bronx and near Yankee stadium in need of some good home cooked Spanish Food then Justine’s Restaurant is a can’t miss.  They are worth their salt and prices.

I thanked God and was reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to enjoy such a good meal whereas there are many who are not so fortunate.  Here’s a toast to good basic qualities of life.

Polash Indian Cuisine Food Review

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: POLASH Indian Cuisine Restaurant Food Review 2013

This MLK Day weekend I decided to have some Indian Food along with some family members.  Having looked up good reviews of places online my brother selected POLASH as the restaurant to try.  Located at 2179 3rd Ave Between 118th and 119th streets. Due to busy schedules we all decided to get our order to go.  The following is what I enjoyed.  As my starter I chose…

Behold the "Somosa Chat"

Behold the “Samosa Chaat”

Samosa Chaat.  This cold appetizer has tomato, pineapple, onions, cucumber and chick peas all chopped and tossed in a tangy sweet Tamarind sauce.  The taste was outstanding!!!!! I managed to avoid most of the cilantro sprinkled on this appetizer as I don’t like cilantro.  However,  all the textures married in that Tamarind with its distinct flavor and the sweet and tangy taste really woke up all my taste buds.

Polash Indian Cuisine Retaurant Food Review 2013 033

After several spoonfuls of this wonderful bowl of happiness.  I turned my attention to as usual, the Main Event.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…Tandoori Chicken seated on a hot throne of Chicken Biriyani!!!!!

Polash Indian Cuisine Retaurant Food Review 2013 026

A little something called...Perfection!!!!!

A little something called…Perfection!!!!!

Now normally traditional Indian food is hot.  This restaurant however makes “all their dishes mild” as per their to go menu.  That being said the flavor was spot on in everything I tasted.  I also had a green sauce that I drizzled over the first bites into the Tandoori Chicken to add some spiciness to it.  This proved to be a wise decision as immediately it heightened the taste of the Tandoori Chicken.

Polash Indian Cuisine Retaurant Food Review 2013 036

Alternating fork fulls of Chicken Biriyani and bites of Tandoori Chicken allowed for just the perfect end of a day out an about.  I took my time savoring the aroma of the rice and it’s own chunks of chicken all throughout.  It was both a happy and sad moment when this meal was finished.  Happy in the fact that my taste buds not to mention appetite had been satiated.  Sad in that I had no more of that delicious meal left over to have for a second day.

This restaurant will definitely be hearing from me again and I absolutely recommend this place to anyone who has a mild tolerance for spicy dishes yet loves Indian food.  What a pleasure it was devouring that meal savoring every aspect of it especially in lieu of my last food adventure at Tick Tock.  You see in my opinion this is what New York is all about.  You can have cuisine from every part of the world here.

The Tick Tock Diner Experience

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Winter 2013 Food Review – Tick Tock Diner Edition

On a disgustingly frigid Friday night in the middle of Winter I decided it was time to visit Tick Tock Diner to satisfy my late night hankering for some good ole diner food.  Located on the corner of West 34th Street and 8th ave in Manhattan’s Chelsea district just opposite the Loews theatre Tick Tock sits beckoning any passersby to come in and sample the fare.   For some reason earlier this afternoon I had a feeling that I needed to have a really good tasting burger and after having eaten at Tick Tock earlier in the year I figured tonight was as good a night as any to stop in and so…

 Tick Tock Pics
There it sits on the Corner

Temp outside tonight was 26 degrees.  It felt like 5 degrees by the time I started to cross the street.  I made my way inside the diner and got seated almost immediately.  Tick Tock was not even half full so I expected service to be forth coming with no delay.  How wrong I was.  For nearly 10 minutes or so I sat waiting for someone to acknowledge my presence as a customer who needed service.  A bit perturbed and hungry I smacked the table I was seated at and asked aloud if I could get some service.  Only then did the head waiter or perhaps floor manager come to me to offer service.  He explained that he thought one of his “guys” was taking care of me and hadn’t realized that I had no one taking care of me.  I decided to abate my pissed attitude and received a menu to look at the options available to me.

Let’s see some more of the interior.
Doesn't appear too busy to me.

Doesn’t appear too busy to me.

I turned my attention to my menu as soon as I received it.  I thought of an appetizer to go with my burger selection and naturally a no brainer were wings.  Next up the arrival of the wings!!!

Let’s go in for a closer look at what began to unfold.

One by one those wings went down.  They were seasoned well and had an excellent crunch to them especially hot and fresh from the kitchen.  The ranch dressing left something to be desired.  IE I should have asked for either honey mustard and/or hot sauce even blue cheese perhaps.  Still, all in all the wings “set the table” for the main event.  My Black Angus cheeseburger and fries.

It just made sense!!

It just made sense!!

Genius!!

Genius!!

Friday Jan 18 2013 plus Tick Tock Pics 048

Placing the hood back on the burger I decided to delve in for the first bites.  I expected to taste divine wisdom in the taste texture and cooking of the burger I remembered having last time I was there over the summer.  What I received was disappointment all the way round.  First, let’s begin with the bun.  Somehow someone decided they needed to toast my burger bun and possibly forgot to take it out before it began to burn as evidenced in the above images.  Now that my appetite was piqued pitch perfect I went in despite the look of warning the charred bun gave me.

Soured taste after soured taste of something just plain gone bad.

Soured taste after soured taste of something just plain gone bad.

To say I was disappointed upon my first bite into this burger is an understatement.  On this night Tick Tock let me down and boy was it a let down.  Burned hamburger bun was just the beginning.  The burger itself was under cooked and there was a lingering foul off putting after taste both mid chew and after.  I told myself let’s see if its perhaps my palette not fully adjusted from having just had the wings to truly get the taste of the burger, but oh no.  Several more test bites of this burger and I was totally satisfied it wasn’t me it was the burger.  Plain awful!!!  I guess Tick Tock is pretty much hit or miss.  Perhaps I was just given lousy service with old hamburger meat.  Whatever the reason the experience has me decidedly not returning to Tick Tock again any time soon.

The only high light of the night in my opinion were the wings and fries.  Later in the evening my poor stomach was bitter from having eaten what I did of that awful burger and I paid no small price for it throughout the night with the discomfort and subsequent “releasings” into the following morning.  I won’t say don’t eat the burgers at Tick Tock, I’ll simply say I won’t eat the burgers from Tick Tock again any time soon.  Till next time this has been another Winter Food Review 2013 Tick Tock Diner Edition  by THEJNSREPORT.

The New Gun Control Legislation

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: The New Gun Control Legislation

Written by Akan Bosemann

The above is the image of an AR15 A3 tactical carbine Assault Rifle.  The rifle used in Sandy Hook was a Bushmaster .223 according to a cbsnews.com article.  In the days and weeks since the Sandy Hook massacre I wonder what have we learned?  If we listen to the news it isn’t much or is it?  After reading the latest news reports I got a very eerie feeling come over me as I thought about war and the various tactics that are utilized in war.  I have no doubt that psychology is a huge part of war.  Thinking about an enemy and how an enemy thinks and acts better prepares one for war against that enemy.   The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language 4th edition defines Psychological Warfare as “The use of various techniques, such as propaganda and terror, to lower an enemy’s morale.”

What is the current agenda being pushed in the media as far as the American people other than a “fiscal cliff”?  I do believe the answer to be gun control laws.  The horrific events in the past year culminating with the latest deadly mass murder in the quiet town of Sandy Hook, CT has brought to the fore front an attack on the 2nd Amendment.  I believe it is being disguised as a genuine attempt to stop gun violence by saying that disarming the public at large will make everyone safe when in fact the opposite is true.

If you want to push or change the popular views on gun ownership, what better way is there to do that than have an incident sufficient enough in shock and abhorrence occur in a place where it’s least expected, where many children are killed to drive home the point?  I’m sure some will disagree with me and believe these events are random.   It’s beyond belief that these events have been planned and executed right on cue to get the reaction from the public desired to support the solution being proffered.  I believe P.R.S or Problem Reaction Solution is happening right before our eyes.

In each of the two latest mass shootings the type of gun used in the shootings appears to be a high magazine assault rifle.  Several hands guns are thrown in and the perpetrator appears to clearly be out of his mind.  Now I ask honestly, is there no similarity or strange coincidence occurring repeatedly?  Suggestions to mental health screenings, and more extensive back ground checks as part of the legislation to prevent assault weapons from falling into the hands of the mentally ill seems reasonable on the surface.  However, I can’t help but wonder how exactly are these checks going to be administered?  Who is going to determine whether someone is mentally fit or not to own a rifle, gun or fire arm?

Fear of widespread bans have caused a spike in gun and ammunition sales all over the country for gun owners who see what is coming and are trying to get their hands on as much ammo and guns as they can before the government completely bans all guns.  Ask yourself, if these weapons were made by corporations (Gun Manufacturers) who supply the same weapons to police and military and private security why isn’t there a ban on the manufacture of these weapons completely?  Knowing corruption and history why should we put our trust in the hands of big government?  If anything the founding fathers favored small government and the right of the citizens to bear arms.  Remember there are foes both foreign and domestic.  A well armed, well trained, knowledgeable and competent citizenry is not what big government wants.

Unarmed people are easier to control and subjugate.  Armed people increase the likelihood that there will be losses on both sides.  Equally armed combatants using the same weapons is even less desirable.  Thinking along Orwellian lines what if what’s actually happening is the legal disarming of the American people?  What if these “random” acts of terror and gun violence are in fact black ops or Psy-Ops being used to justify disarming the American people in order for us to be completely defenseless against an armed, trained, and elite controlled military industrial complex?  Is it inconceivable that this could actually be happening?

Now isn’t the time for our political leaders to hastily vote on legislation that has far reaching implications on the rights of us the American people without careful review.  Self defense is a natural right and yet some how I get the impression that sooner or later that right will be turned on its head and be illegal.   I mean imagine it.  A criminal with a gun talking to the victim saying “by law you aren’t allowed to have a gun.  I got one though and because you don’t, you can’t stop me.”  The war on privacy is still on going  even while it’s abuses continue scarcely with an eyebrow raised.  Now it looks like the right to self defense is as well.

Better still think of Star Wars.  In episode II Attack of the Clones, the clone army was supposedly created to defend the people of the Republic against an army that outnumbered them and yet that army was used to enslave them.  They were defenseless putting their trust in the ones with the guns.  Giving a visual to what I’m talking about I happened recently, while watching a film entitled “War Horse ” I saw the true horrors of past wars where the civilian’s rights and liberties were abused and trampled under foot by their own military.  Officers taking whatever they wanted from families whose homes they occupied against the will of the people.  Property and anything of value was fair game.

What do you suppose would have happened if those same families had weapons like the soldiers who occupied them?  I don’t think there would have been too many officers going about disrespecting families and occupying them.  I imagine gun shots and trained rifles aimed at soldiers who even looked twice at the families they thought to oppress.  The basic point here being a fair fight is one in which both sides have an equal chance of winning.  He who has the gun only respects he who has the gun.

Think back in history to wars in which Native Americans were mowed down row after row with semi automatic machine guns while shooting bows and arrows.  Imagine if the Native Americans had had those same machine guns at their disposal instead of the bows and arrows.  Think of Africa and all those people who died throwing spears, using bows and arrows while they were gunned down.  I abhor gun violence but I’m not so naive as to believe that being completely unarmed is always the wisest decision either.  I end on the note that I support the 2nd amendment and should hope that we as the American people wake up and really begin to see what is happening to our country and our rights.
