Battling For Health & Healthy Living 2

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Battling For Health and Healthy Living 2

https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/01-11-paradise-circus-gui-boratto-remix.mp3

So it’s been a month since my last post on the topic of health.  In that time I’ve had a couple of strange occurrences that knocked me for a loop both figuratively and literally.  First, came in the middle of the month when I began to notice just an ever so slight tingle when I’d begin to urinate.  I ignored this as I would just chalk it up to that feeling you get when you’re holding it in too long.

Over the course of that week there was nothing that really gave me  any cause for concern until Friday evening. While using the restroom to release some of the many glasses of water I’d consumed throughout the course of the day, upon finishing and wiping clean I noticed a pinkish hue on the piece toilet paper I had used.  I thought I must be seeing things so again I ignored it and went about my business.

The following Monday is when I really began to notice that something was not feeling quite right, because now when I went to the bathroom there was this feeling of urgency.  I kept telling myself it could be that I’m feeling this because I’ve just been holding it in too long. The tingle sensation I had felt the week earlier had now become a moderate burning sensation.

Being stubborn, I thought this would just pass on its own and it wasn’t anything of concern as far as an STD because I’m in a monogamous relationship and practice safe sex.  I figured just drink more water.  I even considered the idea of drinking more alcohol because I figured the body will get rid of alcohol just as it does water filtering it through my system and “burn” whatever was causing that moderate burning sensation.  Silly idea right?  I tried it though. LOL

Anyway with each passing visit to the restroom my discomfort when taking a leak got worse.  So much so it began to feel like I was pissing razor blades and wasn’t fully emptying my bladder even though I felt like I was each time.  Then it happened.  For the first time I’d seen what I was in denial about.  On my next trip to the restroom I went through the painful process of releasing a urine stream when near the conclusion I saw a stream of blood shoot out.

I was shocked as well as feeling the (excruciating by this point) burn of taking a leak.  I shared this with my significant other when I realized that my threshold for this amount of suffering had become intolerable and because I didn’t want to keep what was bothering me a secret any longer.  It was suggested that I go to the doctor to see what was going on.  I having insurance had always been reluctant to use it and took pride in foregoing what I used to deem unnecessary trips to the doctor.  All that was about to change.  I called to set up an appointment to see my primary care physician but was told the earliest opening was the following week Monday.  There was no way that I was going to be able to hold out for another week.

From Bad To Worse:

By the late morning of that day I began to feel like shit.  I didn’t want to eat much and my body had begun to feel achy.  I laid down on the couch and decided to just take it easy.  Within an hour I was heating up and developing a fever and suffering pain in my lower back on my left side.  By the evening I was barely able to get off the couch to get to the restroom.  My muscles ached like I’d played tackle football all day and my head and body were burning up.  I sweat profusely and still was like I’m not going to get in an ambulance and go to the E.R. that night.  Instead I took ibuprofen drank more water and had some chicken soup before going to bed.  By morning my sheets were soaked from all the sweating I’d done that night due to the fever.

I got in a cab and went to the E.R.  I was surprised how quickly I got entered into their system and then seen by a nurse and doctor.  It was literally within 15 minutes.  I prepared to wait for hours as I knew the custom at most E.Rs in the outer-boroughs.  My experience this time was a total surprise and very much welcomed.  After some routine health questions from the nurse the doctor on duty came to see me.  I was given a check of my vitals and genitals and my back after a couple of taps with the tips of his fingers to the tender painful spot in my lower back, I exclaimed “Yep right there!!”

My doctor had my blood drawn, I gave a painful urine sample, and then was given an IV and put on antibiotics for what I was to later find out was a bad kidney infection accompanied by a UTI (urinary tract infection).  Thank God for doctors and antibiotics.  Over a week of antibiotics and Tylenol later I was free of infection.  I learned my lesson.  Lesson number one listen to your body if you feel something is not right go to the doctor and get it checked out especially when you have and are paying for health insurance.  Lesson two I learned is don’t wait till symptoms get worse to seek treatment.  I could have avoided the muscle aches, fever, chills, profuse sweating and general razor blade blood spurts had I gone to the E.R much sooner.

Not saying I’ll become a hypochondriac after this experience but I definitely won’t hesitate to seek medical attention when I need it.  I want to be around for a very long time and as I get older I realize the childish days are behind me.  Paying close attention to one’s health as well as living a healthy lifestyle is the key to longevity in my opinion.  Still no idea how I ended up with a kidney infection but I guess that’s not the point.   The point is doing something about it before it’s too late.

Till next time…

Food For Thought

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Food For Thought: Opportunity Costs

https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/01-01-ready-for-the-fight-original-mix.mp3

So the other day while in a discussion about business and opportunity costs, the topic of compromising one’s values or “selling out” came up.  This became a heated topic of discourse due to religion being brought into the equation.  From the outset we weren’t really opposed so much in our perspectives.

However, the more we discussed things at one point a nerve was struck.  It was explained to me that if for example one was working for a certain religious demographic doing free-lance work for say an event, that as a condition of being employed at the event, the contracted person would have to wear the garb or an adornment of the people holding the event even if the contracted person didn’t share the same faith, otherwise he/she couldn’t get the job.

In my opinion the skills of the contracted person are what count not the garments so long as the contracted person dressed professionally or in proper attire to do the work required.  I said to wear the garments of a faith that one doesn’t share to get paid to do a job would be tantamount to selling out or selling one’s soul.

I went on to say, personally I’d turn down the job if that was the price to be paid and the contractors would be better served hiring one of their own or better said someone who could do the work they needed done and who also shared the same faith to avoid a conflict of conscience and religious value.

The discussion continued and I was told that word of mouth spreads and that a decision like that would likely cost one future opportunities down the line.

What’s your take on this subject?  Would you compromise your religious beliefs to have a paid gig?

Battling for Health & Healthy Living

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Battling For Fitness, Health & Healthy Living 😀 https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/01-golden-boys.mp3 I recently came across a post from a fellow blogger Venus Lotus who was sharing a post about actor Wentworth Miller.  In the post there was a before and after photo of him one in which he was in shape and obviously acting for the show “Prison Break” and one which I assume was taken after the series had ended.

The second showed him chunky and out of shape but with a smile on his face.  He (Wentworth) shed light on the context of the images we (the readers) were seeing in which he was the subject of memes online.  Reading his account resonated with me that at some point or other in our lives we all have struggles with our weight, depression and emotional well-being.

Since I was a kid I’ve always been into sports, being fit and active.  Having little understanding of what it’s like to be the out of shape and/or obese population, I assumed that it’s just a simple choice to be fit and healthy or fat and unhealthy.  I always thought you just have to stop eating so much and work out more, then the weight comes off.

To a certain extent this is true, but with all the fast food advertising, hectic work schedules, school, families, and/or other responsibilities, most of us choose an unhealthy lifestyle.  We choose to gorge ourselves on ice creams, fast foods, processed foods, alcohol (beer/liquor) and sugary drinks.  There are a multitude of reasons for this  however, one critical reason is costs.

Talking with my mother about the healthcare costs in America today exploding, I came to the realization that you will either pay for your health today or pay even more for it later.  The choice does matter.

Healthy food choices are for some of us prohibitively expensive while the unhealthy food choices are readily available, relatively cheaper, quick to prepare and consume while fast tracking us on a path to poor health and high medical costs for being unhealthy.  Is this by design or a simple by-product of the modern-day consumer lifestyle we live as Americans?

In my opinion it’s a combination of both but more so by design.  There is little profit to be made off a healthy person if a healthy person doesn’t have to pay for the doctor, or expensive surgeries, medications, & specialists etc.  I equate it to the same reason GM scrapped their first electric cars when they realized the electric car was so much better than gasoline dependent vehicles and how it affected the company’s bottom line when it came to other peripheral industries they derived revenue from such as the need for mechanics, parts, labor etc.

The electric car out performed the gas-powered car and wouldn’t need the maintenance of the gasoline car or dependence on fossil fuels to power and refuel it hence dramatically cutting the costs of routine maintenance and the need for expensive mechanics/technicians, not to mention all the oil used in changing engine oil.

The electric car merely needed a quick diagnostic check and a refilling of wiper fluid that was it.  GM said no, no, no this isn’t good for our bottom-line this product will be great for the consumer but bad for business.  EV 1 program scrapped.

It’s the same with our food industry.  We choose unhealthy eating habits and diets because it’s easy and comforting.  No one becomes obese over night just as no one becomes fit and healthy over night.  It’s a steady process and lifestyle.  What we choose to consume determines how healthy we are.

Having been out of shape relatively speaking for the past few years, I’ve come to the realization that in order to change that one has to decide to eat healthy, and exercise as a lifestyle not a diet fad for a short period of time.  Finding foods that aren’t so expensive yet high in nutritional value isn’t as hard as you’d think.  The question is how much desire do you have to be financially conscious of what you choose to spend your money on feeding your body a healthy diet.  In the outer boroughs the choice is made even more difficult for those of us living at or below the poverty line.

Many supermarkets in the outer-boroughs I have found have higher costs for the same groceries that you’d find say at Trader Joes.  It’s egregious greed in my opinion because the grocers know that a large part of the population shopping their supermarkets pay for their food choices with food stamps.

For this reason they screw everyone else who isn’t on food stamps by raising the price on the products that are popularly purchased or are basic food staples.  Case in point I went to buy a loaf of bread from one such supermarket and anticipated paying $3 at the most of a single loaf.  I was shocked when I went to the cashier to pay and found that the loaf cost almost $6.  I put that loaf of bread right back where I found it and left the store.  I had the time and the patience not to settle for getting price gouged for something as simple as a loaf of bread.

For someone who hasn’t been taught how to shop healthy or save money while shopping, this fits perfectly into the scheme to fast track many of us into unhealthy choices or the simple lazy mentality that “so what this is what it costs and I’m going to get what I like to eat.”

I say all this to say that the choice to begin living and eating healthy is one that I’ve decided to embrace again and with renewed vigor.  If I can impart any wisdom or information that I have learned or gained from making this decision I want to share it with as many people as I can instead of just shaking my head in disconcert.  After all it’s a matter of what you know and don’t know and what you do with that information that will make all the difference.  Stay tuned as I update you periodically on my journey and battle for fitness, health, & healthy living.

Discipline & Children: To Spank Or Not To Spank? That Is The Question

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Discipline & Children: To Spank Or Not To Spank?  That Is The Questionhttps://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/04-violations.mp3

Where to begin? I think we’ll start with the school hours and kids today.  I watch every morning the youth walking, sagging, carousing and slinking their way both to and from school at my absolute least favorite hours to be out and about during the day.  That is to say early morning when they (the youth) are on their way to school either walking or via the bus and/or train and early afternoon right at the beginning of rush hour.

I can’t even begin to describe how unpleasant it is to ride the bus or subway with the youth of today whom I believe are worse than when I and my peers were growing up at their age.  I’m sure every generation says this but today it feels more true today than ever.  It’s as if the words from the bible are literally if not figuratively jumping off the pages and pointing directly at our modern society and the children growing up during this time period.  Children disrespectful to parents etc.

From obscene jokes and expletive laden ignorant comments from unlearned/uneducated mouths spewing filth and noise in the early morning to the evening hours, to the inconsiderate selfish, self absorbed kids who turn a blind eye on a crowded bus sitting in seats reserved for the elderly or disabled.  Youths of today are out of control lacking respect and courtesy for anybody including themselves.

One can’t help but think that this rampant disrespectful, disobedient, nonsensical reign of children on society is the byproduct of what is or isn’t being taught at home.  The kids are the products of their parents and environment.  My siblings and I grew up in a home where spanking did occur.

While I don’t feel that we always deserved it, spankings definitely helped shape us to know and do right from wrong with a healthy respect and fear of our parents who disciplined us not out of malice or vindictiveness but out of love, concern, and a deep desire for correction of wrongful behavior we as children exhibited from time to time.

Let me be clear spankings in my view are not synonymous with excessive beatings or abusing children to where their flesh is ripped or torn or great bodily harm is inflicted.  Spankings are a few to several good licks that get the point across that wrongful behavior will not be tolerated and an explanation of why the child is spanked is provided to them.

For example “little Bobby steals money from mommy’s purse.  Mommy finds out and puts Bobby over her knee and spanks his bare ass several times with hard slaps of a belt or her hand telling Bobby he’s being punished for doing wrong which was stealing.  Little Bobby has just learned that what he did was wrong and if he doesn’t want to get a spanking again he won’t steal.  Lesson hopefully learned.

My late grandmother (my grandfather’s wife who lived to be 106 years old before she passed) felt differently with regards to spankings.  She told me on one occasion that she didn’t believe that spanking children was the best way to discipline them because she remembered her childhood where what hurt her more than a spanking when she did wrong was having her privileges taken away.  Not being able to go outside and play with her friends was worse than physical punishment in her view.  I don’t agree with her viewpoint on that but I respect it.

All that said. I turn the question to you the reader

Dining Out: The Nocciola Experience 2016!!!

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Dining Out: The Nocciola Experience 2016!!!

https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/06-the-way.mp3

In our last food experience we talked about eating at home and saving some green.  This time around we visit East Harlem’s Nocciola Restaurant for a dining experience out.  Located between 2nd and 3rd Ave on E 116th Street.  Nocciola gives the neighborhood a much needed upgrade to the stereotypical barrio restaurant experience.  The food and service at Nocciola is also a significant upgrade versus restaurants past.Nocciola Black Board B+WUpon entering Nocciola you see this blackboard above Nocciola MenuThe concept of housemade pastas and only wines for consumption with no hard liquor is a good alternative to most of the food options in East Harlem’s restaurant scene. We started our dinner off with complimentary bread and olive oil with pesto for dipping our bread in.Nocciola BreadThe Bread is very very good here.Olive oil and pesto You just want to soak up all that delicious olive oil based dip into the bread and slowly savor the flavor.

Dinner @ Nocciola

Dinner @ Nocciola

To get things started for an appetizer after the bread I opted to share a side of creamy polenta with mushrooms & shaved parmesan cheese.  This was so delicious.  I’ve had polenta numerous times at various places but this was the creamiest polenta I’ve ever had.  The contrast in textures to the meaty mushrooms on top really livened things up.Creamy Polenta & Mushrooms w Shaved Parmesan 2A closeup on that creamy polenta & mushrooms.Pappardelle @ NocciolaFor our main course we chose whole Branzino and Pappardelle pasta. Pappardelle @ Nocciola Close UpThis is yet another great pasta I’ve never tried before now.  It’s a meatsauce with broad long strips of pasta.  Pappardelle on forkI thoroughly enjoyed fork full after fork full of this dish.  I recommend going with the full portion plate.Branzino @ NocciolaThe Branzino was cooked to perfection.  There were grilled potatoes, asparagus, & a grilled lemon wedge adorning the plate.  A nice bottle of Pinot Grigio helped us wash down our meal before desert.Wine & FoodNocciola has quite an extensive list of wines.  If your not sure of what you’d like the servers can definitely point you in the right direction and allow you to taste a wine before deciding whether or not you will have a glass or the full bottle. Pannacotta @ NocciolaThe pannacotta is rich and pairs well with the fruit and powdered sugar & chocolate sauce.  It’s not a heavy desert which is perfect after everything we ate. On a scale of 1 – 5 dinner plates.  Nocciola gets 4 1/2 out of 5 dinner plates.  We recommend Nocciola to anyone interested in changing from the “usual” dining experience and give your palate something different.  The menu boasts more than what you have seen here and I’m sure will not fail to please.

Till next time this has been dining out with THEJNSREPORT: The Nocciola Experience 2016!!!

Who’s Got Your Vote?

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Who’s Got Your Vote?https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/nas-black-republicans-instrumental.mp3

With the year going by quickly and the last vestiges of President Obama’s last term in office coming to an end the country faces the future with uncertainty as to who will be the next president of the U.S.  At last look it appears the race comes down to Donald Trump vs Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio for republican nomination.  On the democratic side we see Hillary Clinton vs Bernie Sanders.

I’m left with the impression that there is no “dog” in the race I really want to see as president.  So I’ll turn this question to the public.  If you had to pick one out of the current candidates for president whether it’s Democrat or Republican Or Independent who’s got your vote?

Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT: Pasta, Tomato Sauce & Chicken Breasts

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT: Pasta, Tomato Sauce & Chicken Breasts

😀 https://thejnsreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/1-tonight-best-you-ever-had-feat-ludacris-from-the-mot.mp3Organic Chicken BreastsSo I began the latest cooking at home experience by going to a favorite go to dish that’s so easy anybody can make it.  Now whether you’re a traditionalist or a semi homemade personality it’s all the same to me when it comes to saving time, making something delicious and healthy at home saving some coin vs eating out.  Yes ladies and gents I adore Spaghetti & Meat Sauce with or without meat balls and pretty much almost any take on spaghetti & sauce within reason.

So we’ll begin with the ingredients:

2 packages of frozen organic skinless & boneless chicken breasts

2 large ripe tomatoes

2 cloves of fresh garlic

2 tablespoons black pepper

2 tablespoons white pepper

1 tablespoon crushed red pepper

1 jar of your favorite store brand tomato sauce

2 tablespoons of Olive Oil

3 tablespoons Parmesan Cheese

1 teaspoon Thyme

Kosher Sea Salt season to taste

Adobo all purpose seasoning season to taste

1 package linguine or spaghetti

In a sauce pan add the olive oil and the finely chopped garlic let it simmer on low flame while taking the chicken breast and prepping it for seasoning.  Next take the 2 large tomatoes and quarter them.  Carefully add the tomatoes into the saucepan with the olive oil and garlic.

Next cover the sauce pan while seasoning the thawed organic chicken breasts with the Adobo, thyme, black pepper & white pepper.  Coat all sides of the breasts before placing carefully into the sauce pan.Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT 2

Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT 3

Cover the sauce pan and let the chicken cook some with the tomatoes and olive oil and garlic.  Simmer for about 10 minutes.  When the tomatoes begin to dissolve stir the sauce pan and add half of the jar of tomato sauce to the sauce pan/pot.  Sprinkle parmesan cheese evenly over the chicken breasts and cover the saucepan allowing the sauce to continue to cook the chicken.Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT Parmesan Chicken  After 10 minutes uncover the sauce an using a knife and fork begin to cut the chicken breasts into strips or cubes as desired (Can be done prior to placing in the sauce pan right after seasoning).  I like to play with this option.  Sometimes cutting up the chicken breasts either before or after placing into the saucepan.Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT Chicken & Tomato Sauce

In another pot of boiling hot water add two tablespoons of olive oil and several healthy shakes of kosher salt before adding the entire package of spaghetti pasta.  Let cook till al dente (usually about 8 minutes) then strain and hold to add to the simmering tomato & chicken breast sauce.Pasta  After straining carefully add the pasta to the sauce and keep flame low as you stir together the sauce and pasta.Cooking At Home With THEJNSREPORT Pasta W Tomato Sauce & Organic Chicken Breasts  Leave flame low and cover pot.  Serve when ready to eat.  Add additional spices as desired.  There you have it, Spaghetti & Chicken Breast with Tomato Sauce for dinner.  Mmm mmm son!!!
