In memory of a good friend who’s gone far too soon and whom will not be forgotten

I’m breaking from my usual introduction in this posting as I am mourning the passing of a good friend who touched many peoples lives and has shocked all of us friends and family in his passing.  This THEJNSREPORT is dedicated to a man I am proud to call a friend Kyle Spidle.  I heard the unfortunate news from a mutual friend early Thursday morning and it was like everything went quiet and in slow motion.  Words registered in my mind but the actual acceptance of the truth of the matter was too much for my mind to handle at first. The day drifted and dragged as the surrealism of the days events washed over me against my best efforts not to show its effects on my face.  I failed miserably.

I have been in a dis-associative state since I heard the words that my friend Kyle Spidle has passed away September 20, 2012.  From the brief time that I knew Kyle he always had a room warming smile, an outgoing personality, and friendly demeanor.  The following is a poem I dedicate to Kyle’s memory.

A man who is deeply missed RIP bro.

Too quick we are to take embrace in a comforting thought through time and space

that today’s victory’s can erase tragic falls from top to base.

Life will give you its subtle grace while swiftly with ignorance you often race

towards your destiny you will have to face while you go here n there and place to place

Till ends meet and so your chase has left no clues no single trace

And until that day we meet again face to face

I pray God keep your soul warm and safe.

Kyle Spidle RIP brother till we meet again.

Welcome to the THEJNSREPORT’S Floral Gallery Summer 2012

As many of us New Yorker’s endured the heat of the summer and seeing as how summer is rapidly coming to an end I found myself thinking about really the abundance of variety in the world and specifically the plethora of different plants there are once again showing the glory of God’s creations.

The following are pictures of some of the flowers and plants I took over the summer.

These remind me of little pink butterflies.

A wonderful and dedicated gardener allowed me the pleasure and privilege to shoot photos of some of her finest work.

Can you say midnight garden stars?

More beauties

Violet colored plants always seem cool and soothing to me

When I saw the flowers below I was immediately drawn to them and had to snap several pics.  That shade of red radiated energy.

Red Energy

Something Purple, something Lavender and Green 🙂

I am and was truly amazed at all these different flowers and plants this amazing gardener cultivated and maintained.

These beauties reminded of large chameleon like spiders with their thin leaves looking a lot like spider legs.

And last but not least in the finale a plant so awesome looking I dubbed it The Empress.

Her majesty sits covered in opulent leaves. She rules!!!

Feel free to leave comments as to which flowers in this collection are your favorites.  Until next time this has been THEJNSREPORT.

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S Summer Food Travel Log IHOP Bronx Edition!!

This past hump day I decided spontaneously after doing some sight seeing and running a few errands to stop at a brand new IHOP location in the Bronx just off the Bruckner Expressway and WhitePlains Road.  Truthfully only two thoughts came to mind as I neared my destination.  The first was man I’m hungrry!!!  The second was to ponder if my experience at an IHOP in the Bronx would be the same as it had been in Manhattan.  On such a gorgeous day out I thought it would be really cool if they were able to offer outside seating but perhaps that’d be too much to ask.  At any rate I approached the entrance.

There it sits on the corner of The Bruckner Expressway and White Plains Road.

There it sits on the corner of The Bruckner Expressway and White Plains Road.  Looks like the other chains…let’s see inside.

IHOP 2

Once inside the main foyer area I snapped a couple of pics of the inside and waited to be seated.

IHOP 3

Guess I caught em at the best time of the day…when no one is there. Yes Lawd!!! Lawda mercy!!!

I stood at the waiting area where no one was in sight to greet me.  After a moment a nice employee made her presence known and said it’d be just a moment before I was seated.  I got to sit in a comfortable booth near the back of the place.  It was the perfect spot, because I was insulated by the booth on my right side while being able to look out across the seating area to see the Bruckner Expressway.  Being the restaurant was mostly empty at a little past noon I had an unobstructed view of windows showing cars whizzing by on the expressway.  I thought to myself this is what you call hi-speed people watching as I waited for a server to come and bring my menus.

IHOP 4

A few minutes pass and I’m greeted by a seemingly decent waiter who spoke with rapid fire questions and a direct to the point demeanor.  It was only slightly off putting because I’m thinking “Hey this is your job and there isn’t exactly a rush of tables that need service right this moment so why don’t you slow down just a bit and allow me to finish what I’m saying while you’re taking my order”.  When I finished ordering I returned my attention to the cars going by.  My glass of OJ showed up first.

The OJ

Always one to try to be a bit wiser than most restaurants think of the average patron, I left my OJ on ice untouched.  I wasn’t about to fall for the drink your liquids before your meal comes trick.  It held its place on the table until the “Main Event”.  LOL.  I continued to bide my time by looking around the restaurant and out the windows contemplating what was coming and whether I had enough stomach for what I ordered which was breakfast food.

The view says it all I think

The view says it all I think…No one in sight.

Time kept ticking away and just as my patience was beginning to teeter onto seeking out my server to check my order… out came my food.

Ladies and Gentlemen...The Main Event!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen…The Main Event!!!

Decisions decisions which do I attack first? As you can see above I got the “scrambled eggs” and cheese with turkey bacon, stuffed french toast, and pancakes for good measure.  I decided to go with the pancakes first before diving into the eggs.

Ahhh The short stack

Ahhh The short stack

Now for the review.  There is no question that the food comes looking as advertised in their menus which in many of my experiences usually isn’t the case.  That being said, it’s official, I do not like egg substitute or eggs from a carton.  While they look like eggs and may have a similar texture, the taste is nothing short of bland and really artificial tasting in your mouth.  My tongue definitely noticed that I was not consuming real eggs.  IHOP uses a lot of salt with the cheese in my opinion to mask this in their egg substitute.  I ate them any way as I was famished.  Now the turkey bacon made my mouth sing as I combined a piece of it with the first bites of my pancakes and maple syrup.  I decided to put off eating the stuffed french toast in the mean time.

Wakey wakey...eggs and bakey!!!

Wakey wakey…eggs and bakey!!!

IHOP 9

How do you love a short stack of buttermilk pancake goodness?  Obviously with a hunk of butter, some good ole strips of turkey bacon, and a smothering of maple syrup of course.  I almost went in for a swig of my OJ but I refrained valiantly savoring every delicious bite.  I began alternating back and forth between “the eggs, cheese,” turkey bacon and bites of my pancakes.  This is what ensued.

IHOP 10

IHOP 11

Pancakes get a Paula Deen sized drenching of maple syrup

IHOP 12

Going...Going

Going…Going

"Eggs" and Turkey Bacon...Gone!

“Eggs” and Turkey Bacon…Gone!

While I contemplated the mysteries of how maple syrup and pancakes union first came to be, my focus began to shift toward my stuffed french toast.

Stuffed French Toast IHOP Style HaWhaat!!!?

Stuffed French Toast IHOP Style HaWhaat!!!?

The Ohmygoodness of it!!!

The Ohmygoodness of it!!!

Victory!!!

And like that… poof it’s Gone!!!

That stuffed french toast is sinfully delicious.  I had mine topped with caramelized apples and whipped cream.  They do come with the option of a variety of other fruit preserves toppings.  However,  the combination of in my mind apple pie filling and whipped cream on top of a light and fluffy pastry that’s doughnut taste (always a welcome treat) is married with a cream cheese is simply put… smart!  The result is outstanding and definitely a must have for a cheat day treat!!  As evidenced above, only streaks remained.  Oh almost forgot the OJ.  That too went down smooth but oh so deliciously cold.

“May I have some of your tasty beverage to…wash this down?”

Yessuh it all hit the spot!

For a first impression I guess I have to admit IHOP was what I expected it should be.  Service was decent and I handled my business with every item I ordered so it must’ve been good.  Recommends on this visit say get the pancakes, turkey bacon, and stuffed french toast topped with apple pie and whip cream, skip the eggs.

The OJ which was very cleansing and topped off the palate was to my surprise fresh squeezed or at least filled with pulp and tasted fresh.  I’ve eaten at other chain restaurants like IHOP that give you OJ concentrate which never tastes any better than someone taking left over pulp from and empty container and pouring tap water on it and serving it to you.  This was a pleasant surprise and for the price my meal was very affordable.

I recommend IHOP in the Bronx as a definite destination on my food map tour for repeat visits.  I have to mention that their menu is very extensive with far more options and varieties of food combinations than what I had so I will definitely be back to try their burgers, chicken, appetizers and other dishes.  Also my experience was pretty much the same as it had been in Manhattan.   Till next time this has been THEJNSREPORT’S Summer Food Travel Log IHOP Bronx Edition.

THEJNSREPORT’S Must Reads for end of Summer/Fall 2012

Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S Summer/ Fall 2012 Must Read List

So several months back after taking a break from watching lackluster movies that came out this year and looking forward to Summer here in the Empire City aka Gotham aka “I Love NY”, I decided it had been quite a while since my last book read (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy) and so I started to pick some books that piqued my interest.  One of these books was “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E. L James.  I found this book a very interesting and entertaining read .  By the time I was nearly done reading it, it was suggested that I read another book titled “Antebellum” by Author R, Kayeen Thomas.

Let me first say that both books are well written page turners that thoroughly engross, envelope, and entertain the reader.  I can’t count how many times I’ve nearly missed or missed my stop on the train while reading them.  Both books share a common thread even though they encompass two entirely different subjects.  The common thread being sex and relationships.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” deals with relationships and in depth descriptions of the sexual appetites and experiences of both the two main characters in BDSM while discovering for themselves what defines their relationship.  Is it sex or is the sex merely an essential expression  of love felt between two young people from different backgrounds?  Either way the sex somehow isn’t the central theme of the story even though it dominates a major aspect of the relationship between both main characters.   It’s a very well paced book with lots of detail and believable fantasy.  It leaves the reader contemplating and reflecting on one’s own assumptions of what a relationship is defined as.   While I personally like this book, I tend to think for some it would be clearly adult content too descriptive for prudes or the timid to entertain reading.  I say to each their own.

What a read!!

Antebellum on the other hand addresses sex as a component of an even more powerful story bridging relationships not just between men and women but slavery and the contemporary world of today intertwined through time travel.

This in my opinion is a unique look at  how the past and the future can be merged seamlessly while telling true history and struggles of Afro-American slaves in America and where the descendants of those slaves are today.  Ground breaking and thought provoking is what came to my mind while reading this book.  I could literally see what was being described both in our modern world and then back during slavery in early American history.  An even more important aspect of the story evolves around the use of the N -word both during slavery and today in the post civil rights era.  I couldn’t help but remember thinking about the Black Men Posting while reading certain chapters of the book.

This is a story I feel I will want to read again and highly recommend for all youth, especially those who are ignorant and/or have limited understanding of their history.  It speaks to the media images of whatever music artist is currently relevant while glorifying the lifestyles they project and brag about.  I’ve become a huge fan of this book and want to see it made into a feature length film.  When I think of the impact on screen this story could have if done right it gives me goose bumps.  Sometimes movie adaptations of books don’t always pan out right but the potential is there and that potential could awaken many youths whose attention spans are so short they’d rather watch the movie than read the book.

Probably the best book I’ve read this year!!

When I started to read “Fifty Shades of Grey” I had no idea what the story would involve other than what I had heard second hand from some people who’d said they put the book down and couldn’t finish it due to the subject matter.   Never being one to let someone else’s experience dictate for me what I was to think without reading it for myself I picked up the book.  After reading it cover to cover my overall impression is…It’s a great read but not for everyone.  Antebellum I really enjoyed and I say GET THIS BOOK!!!!  Anyone whose read either book and has some insight they’d like to share feel free to reply to this post.

This has been another report from THEJNSREPORT.

Dinosaur BBQ Edition Pt.I

Welcome to THEJNSREPORTS NYC Summer 2012 Food Travel Log – Dinosaur BBQ Edition

First stop on this year’s summer food destinations NYC is in Harlem at Dinosaur BBQ!!!  I’d kept a pulse on this place since it had been mentioned to me about a year ago by a friend.  I hadn’t managed to actually stop in and sample the fare until today.  With that said let’s get down to the experience.  Located at 700 W 125th Street just off the West Side High Way and Riverside Dr.  This Dinosaur BBQ location actually is quite a nice spot to stop and eat in with the beautifully designed pier just to its west, perfect for sight seeing or people watching.  Many a picture was taken while I waited for a friend to join in the Dinosaur experience.

The Entrance

The Sign

Doesn’t that just say it all?  With eyes and stomachs wide open in anticipation of BBQ goodness we went inside the establishment and were promptly seated. Once inside I had to take a picture of the mural on the wall adjacent us.

Foreshadowing???

The feel of the place was modern rustic.  I liked the overall atmosphere and despite the mural pic above it got busy shortly after we were seated.  I had shall we say a prehistoric appetite and based on the name of the place, I figured portions to be over sized like at Dallas BBQ.  How wrong I was.  Not that it’s a bad thing I mean clearly obesity is one of the biggest hurdles America faces along with debt but that’s for another post.

I expected however, when reading the menu and seeing Jumbo Sized Wings that naturally they would be huge.  When they came out looking like any ordinary pieces of  plain buffalo wings I felt cheated to say the least.   So far not looking like we’re off to a good start but let’s continue.  My friend decided to order the Fried Green Tomatoes and Salmon Fritters, while I ordered The “Jumbo Sized Wings”.

Next up was the Yuengling Beer on tap.  I’m personally not a big fan of beer but Yuengling wasn’t bad at all especially at $4 a pint.  The Salmon Fritters I give good marks as they tasted great with a hint of spice to them while the Fried Green Tomatoes for me were good but just a bit greasy.  The wings were great despite their size with smoke flavor infused into them.  I should have taken pics of them but sadly neglected to.  In any event I had them plain but dipping some in a variety of sauces at the table made them very worth while.  Our appetites were piqued for the main course.  I decided to try the Dinosaur Platinum Margarita for the perfect summer day cocktail.  When it came it to the table it looked like a glass of lemonade as shown below but…

Dinosaur BBQ's Platinum Margarita!!! Uh...Yesssuh!!!

Dinosaur BBQ’s Platinum Margarita!!! Uh…Yesssuh!!!

when I tasted this drink I nearly lost it!  Oh my goodness!!!  The bartenders who make the Platinum at Dinosaur are to be commended whichever of them makes this drink because it was outrageously good.  A perfect blend of patron tequila Cointreau, sour mix, and Gran Marnier mixed together where the Gran Marnier plays subtly but significant enough in the drink that you know why it costs as much as it does.  I sipped this slowly while waiting for the meat and sides to arrive.

Now the ribs!!! These pork ribs I believe are smoked after they’ve been marinated for 24 hours.  Wow were they worth the preparation that went into them.  I went to pick up a rib after separating it with my knife and fork and the meat literally fell off the bone which was delicious down to the marrow and juices.  Mmmm Mmmm!!!

Ribs and Sides

Ribs and Sides

Oh yes I cleaned those ribs to the bone, bit off the rib tips, and chewed that marrow.  They were that good!  The sides however, underwhelmed.  Let’s start with the Mac N Cheese.  While creamy this side tasted like too much paprika or something was added to it and there was far less of a desirable cheesy flavor to recall me to take more than two bites of this dish.  The creole potato salad was also just another lackluster potato salad.  In my opinion I’ve actually had supermarket potato salad that tasted better.  The simmered collard greens were delicious and saved the sides from a total 3 for 3 disappointment.  I used what was left of my amazing Platinum Margarita to wash away the after taste of the Mac N Cheese and Creole Potato Salad…

Platinum Margarita Finished

Desert followed this…

Dino Cheese cake Vs Peanut Butter Pie

Like the caption it was Peanut Butter Pie vs Dino Cheesecake.  I sampled a small piece of the cheesecake which, while looking amazing, lacked in taste and flavor.  It actually tasted to me like a fluffy bland tasting cheesecake topped with fruit preserve.  The crust of the cheesecake was a bit too thick and even with my fork I had trouble breaking the crust away with a piece of the cheesecake.    The Peanut Butter Pie I had was the star of the night next to my Platinum Margarita and those Ribs.

I took my time working that Peanut Butter and Chocolate w whipped cream down to streaks on the plate. Man was it delicious and decadent.

What Pie?

What Pie?

I reckon that slice will be worth 30 minutes of high intensity cardio tomorrow.

Overall the experience eating at Dinosaur was worth writing home about.  I’d say for my first visit to this place I’d give it 3/4 of a Rack.  Definitely know my go to’s for main course, cocktail, and desert.  Full Rack of Ribs, Platinum Margarita, and Peanut Butter Pie.  I’ll skip the Mac N Cheese, and the Potato Salad.  Price for the meal was definitely reasonable and would recommend to anyone who’s a fan of BBQ.  Next time I’ll have to try their chicken and burgers.  Till next entry this has been another NYC Summer Food Travel log 2012 report by THEJNSREPORT.  Stay tuned for our next destination.

Lebron and Nike OMG! Stop The Madness!!!

Posted by THEJNSREPORT on August 24, 2012
Posted in: Social Commentary. Tagged: Capitalism, Lebron, Michael Jordan, Nike. 2 Comments

Welcome to THEJNSREPORTS LEBRON & NIKE OMG!! STOP THE MADNESS!!!

Todays topic addresses Capitalism and the consumer.  For us here at THEJNSREPORT it is truly disgusting, to acutally be able to see how wicked and corrupt corporations can be in their highly exploitative marketing and anticipation of potential violence increases due to the high price of Lebrons latest shoe to be released this fall.  At $300 a pair, news reports say the company (Nike) will have to due everything prudent to secure its locations and store personnel as well as customers when its released.  I think back to my child hood where everyday robberies for name brand jackets and sneakers came due to their high prices and status associated with them.

I can envision many inner city residents who can’t afford to have the shoes doing everything possible to secure their social status by throwing more of the wealth they don’t have away for a pair of basketball shoes that most won’t wear on or near a basketball court.   Those who know how exclusive the shoes are due to their price I believe will lead to a rise in robberies for the high end foot wear.  Does and should Lebron and Nike care about that potential impact in communities where most of the inhabitants can’t afford to own a pair?  Should that even be their problem since this is America and capitalism is King?

I guess like an anchor on the news put it Nike is a luxury brand and like any other luxury corporation charging exorbitantly high prices does so with the implied exclusive label attached by pricing their shoes at a very high purchase price.  Perhaps Nike and Lebron could make more money by pricing the shoes at half that price where potentially more consumers would be able to purchase the shoe.  That is if they’re  thinking in terms of global appeal and wanting to be like McDonald’s which is everywhere.   Nike could do the same with the LBJ brand without contributing to a rise in violence by their price point.  Either way its up to the consumer to be smart or not smart enough to choose to purchase such an expensive shoe.

In the end it really comes down to a common sense approach to this.  If you can afford the shoes and choose to purchase them feel free to do so.  However, many who most of us would recognize as not able to afford the shoes will want them because of the status symbol recognition associated with the shoes whether they are able to afford them or not.  Close your eyes and see it.  Many urban residents living in projects will have a pair of LBJ X’s on with a cell phone they can’t afford and sagging expensive jeans meanwhile having no food in their refrigerators and bumming rides on public transportation while rocking a pair of LBJ X’s LMAO!  Funny but not funny.

Now picture this, Michael Jordan Brand releases a limited edition Jordan shoe to rival Lebron James and a price war for luxury basketball shoes ensues where Jordan prices his next shoe at $500 a pair reclaiming his spot as number 1 on and off the court in the shoe arena he helped bring to its current popularity levels.  Materialism and Capitalism hard at work.

Black Men Man up and Pull Your Pants Up!

Posted by THEJNSREPORT on August 15, 2012

Welcome to THEJNSREPORTS “BLACK MEN MAN UP AND PULL YOUR PANTS UP WHILE YOU’RE AT IT!Pull Your Pants Up

AS THE TITLE TO THIS POST STATES, TODAY WE ADDRESS A SERIOUS ISSUE PERMEATING BLACK CULTURE FROM ITS ORIGIN IN PRISON TO MAINSTREAM FASHION, AND THE COMMERCIAL WORLD AS WELL AS URBAN CENTERS.  THERE WAS A TIME IN OUR HISTORY WHERE A MAN COULD BE LOOKED AT AND RESPECTED ON THE BASIC PREMISE FIRST AND FOREMOST THAT AS A MAN, A MAN FIRSTLY SHOULD RESPECT HIMSELF.  HOW DOES A MAN SHOW THAT HE RESPECTS HIMSELF?  I TEND TO THINK THIS IS USUALLY MANIFESTED BY HOW A MAN CARRIES HIMSELF, AND FROM THAT, THE WORLD AND SOCIETY AT LARGE WILL VIEW HIM  EITHER RESPECTING OR DISRESPECTING HIM.

I ALSO ASSUME MOST PEOPLE HAVE HEARD THE PHRASE “CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN”, WELL THAT STATEMENT GENERALLY CAN BE UNDERSTOOD AS TRUE DEPENDING ON THE MAN IN THE CLOTHES, HIS CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, AND THEN HOW THE CLOTHES ARE WORN.  I’LL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE.  WHAT YOU WOULD THINK OF A POLICE OFFICER WHOSE UNIFORM HAS HIS PANTS SAGGING BEHIND HIS KNEES, AND HIS BADGE BARELY HANGING ONTO HIS UNIFORM SHIRT?  WHAT WOULD YOU THINK OF A DOCTOR  SLOPPILY DRESSED WITH ALL HIS  UTENSILS STREWN ALL OVER HIS OFFICE AND HIMSELF LOOKING DISHEVELED AND DISINTERESTED?  WOULD YOU GO TO THAT POLICE OFFICER AND TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY?  WOULD YOU GO TO THAT DOCTOR JUST BASED ON HOW HE WAS DRESSED FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION? OBVIOUSLY THOSE WITH ANY SEMBLANCE OF COMMON SENSE WOULD IMMEDIATELY I SHOULD HOPE, SAY HELL NO!!!  WHY IS THAT?  BECAUSE THE IMAGE YOU PRESENT TO THE PUBLIC IS WHAT THEY SEE AND IN MOST CASES JUDGE ONE BY.  THAT BEING SAID WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO BLACK MEN IN THIS COUNTRY IS SO DISTURBING I CAN NO LONGER HOLD MY TONGUE ON IT OR EVEN TRY TO DEFEND THE DECAY IN THE PUBLIC IMAGE AND PERCEPTION OF YOUNG BLACK MEN TODAY.

THE ORIGIN OF SAGGING

THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR THE YOUNGER BLACK MALES AND FEMALES WHO ARE HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY WHAT THEY SEE THEIR FAVORITE RAPPER OR ACTOR OR MAINSTREAM ICON THEY LOOK UP TO DOING, FROM HOW THEY DRESS AND SPEAK TO HOW THEY TREAT OTHERS AROUND THEM.  THE IDEA THAT IF THESE ICONS AND CELEBRITIES ARE DRESSING A CERTAIN WAY, AND ACTING A CERTAIN WAY MEANS THAT IT MUST BE COOL AND THEREFORE ACCEPTABLE TO EMULATE.

EARLIER IN HISTORY (AND I’M SURE IT PROBABLY IS STILL TRUE TO AN EXTENT TODAY) PRISON ISSUE CLOTHING CAME IN A STANDARD ONE SIZE FITS ALL.  NOT THAT IT MATTERS TO MOST PEOPLE ESPECIALLY IF SOMEONE IS IN JAIL, HOW THE FASHION AND FIT OF THE PRISON CLOTHING IS.  I IMAGINE MOST WOULD HOPE IT WOULD BE THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE AND DETESTABLE GARB EVER DESIGNED AS FURTHER PUNISHMENT AND A REMINDER FOR THOSE DOING TIME AS TO THE UNIFORM OF THE INHABITANTS OF PRISONS.  MANY YOUNG BLACK MALES SENTENCED TO PRISON TERMS WERE GIVEN THE STANDARD PRISON ISSUE AND WHEN THE PRISONER WAS  SMALLER THAN THE CLOTHES ISSUED THEY SAGGED.  THEY PROBABLY DIDN’T HAVE BELTS FOR FEAR OF THEM BEING USED TO EITHER HANG THEMSELVES OR AS A WEAPON OF SOME KIND.  THE LOOSE FITTING UNIFORM SAGGED AND IT WAS HOW THEY WERE WORN.

NOW IN ADDITION TO MANY OF THE CLICHE HORRORS OF PRISON ONE IN PARTICULAR THAT STANDS OUT IN MY MIND IS RAPE AND PROSTITUTION.   THE LACK OF FEMALE INTERACTION FOR THE HETEROSEXUALS IN PRISON LEAD TO THE DESIRE AND NEED FOR A SUBSTITUTE AND IN PRISONS WHERE MALE AND FEMALE ARE SEPARATE, WHAT IS LEFT?  THE MORE DOCILE AND EASIER TO CONTROL MEMBERS OF THE SAME SEX.  A HO OR PROSTITUTE IN JAIL WOULD BE KNOWN BY HOW THEY DRESSED AND WALKED AND THE MORE EFFEMINATE WERE BRAZENLY AND SEEMINGLY RESIGNED, IF NOT FORCED,  TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT THEY WERE ABOUT BY HAVING THEIR PANTS DOWN SHOWING THEIR UNDERWEAR OR  BARE ASSES LETTING ALL THOSE WHO WANTED TO ENGAGE THEM SEXUALLY KNOW THAT THEY WERE AVAILABLE FOR CONQUEST.  THIS PRISON MENTALITY WOULD BE RELEASED  ALONG WITH MANY OF THOSE WHO SERVED PRISON SENTENCES BACK ONTO INNER CITY STREETS AND NEIGHBORHOODS.  ONCE OUTSIDE, THE PRISON MENTALITY AND FASHION BEGAN TO PERMEATE THE NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE THESE FORMER INMATES WOULD GO AND RESIDE.

KIDS SEEING THESE OLDER FORMER PRISONERS WOULD TRY TO EMULATE WHAT THEY PERCEIVED AS COOL DUE TO THEIR LIMITED LIFE EXPERIENCE AND GENERAL IGNORANCE TO THE FACT THAT, WHAT THEY BELIEVE TO BE COOL IS ACTUALLY A BY-PRODUCT OF A NEGATIVE ASPECT OF PRISON AND PRISON CULTURE.  THIS HISTORY AND ORIGIN HAS BEEN LOST AMONGST CURRENT BLACK YOUTHS WHO EITHER DON’T KNOW OR DON’T CARE ABOUT THEIR PERSONAL IMAGE AND THE PERCEPTIONS THAT ARE CONJURED BASED ON HOW THEY DRESS AND CARRY THEMSELVES.  THE PROBLEM THEN ESCALATES WHEN TRYING TO BREAK STEREOTYPES ABOUT INNER CITY YOUTHS WHO MAY NOT IN FACT BE “THUGS”, “GOONS”, “GANG-BANGERS” ETC, BUT MERELY YOUTHS WHO WANT TO REBEL AND THINK THAT THEY ARE BEING DIFFERENT OR “REAL” OR “DOWN” BY DRESSING “URBAN OR HOOD”.   THE TRAYVON MARTIN CASE IS ANOTHER SHINING EXAMPLE OF THIS STEREOTYPICAL THINKING THAT LED TO A YOUNG BLACK MALES LIFE BEING TAKEN.   IT ALSO SPEAKS TO A HISTORY WHERE BLACK MEN WERE DEGRADED, ABUSED, LYNCHED, AND EVERY OTHER HORROR IMAGINABLE THAT WENT ALONG WITH SLAVERY AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERAS.  COPS FREQUENT “RANDOM” STOP AND FRISKS AKA ILLEGAL SEARCHES AND EMBARRASSMENT OF MANY BLACK MEN INCLUDED HAVING THEIR PANTS PULLED DOWN AND THEIR UNDERWEAR  AND EVEN THEIR GENITALS EXPOSED FOR THE SIMPLE PURPOSE OF HUMILIATION FOR THE AMUSEMENT OF THEIR TORMENTORS MANY OF WHICH WERE COPS.  IT APPEARS AS THOUGH CONTEMPORARY “BLACK AMERICAN CULTURE” HAS INTERNALIZED THIS HATRED AND DISRESPECT TO A POINT WHERE THEY DO IT TO THEMSELVES AND THINK THAT THEY ARE BEING REBELS OR “REAL” WHEN IN FACT THEY’VE ACCEPTED THAT NEGATIVE AND ARE NOW DISRESPECTING AND DEBASING THEMSELVES WILLFULLY THROUGH THEIR OWN IGNORANCE OF HISTORY.

WITH A GROWING DISINTEREST IN EDUCATION, RELENTLESS BUDGETS CUTS TO PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, COUPLED WITH MANY POVERTY STRICKEN YOUTHS ENTICED TO STREET LIFE HUSTLING (IN MANY CASES DUE TO  SERIOUS SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES), THE DRESS CODE OF THE STREETS BECAME POPULAR AND BLENDED SEEMLESSLY WITH PRISON MENTALITY.  SAGGING BECAME ACCEPTABLE.  IT BECAME RECOGNIZED AS THE UNIFORM OF THE STEREOTYPICAL DRUG DEALERS, EX-CONS, GANG MEMBERS AND INNER CITY YOUTHS.  MY POINT BEING ONE MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY BE A PROSTITUTE, BUT IF ONE CONTINUALLY DONS A PROSTITUTES UNIFORM MANY WILL JUDGE THAT PERSON TO BE AS THEY ARE DRESSED.  RIGHT OR WRONG THAT IS THE WAY OF THINGS.  THIS SIMPLE TRUTH ESCAPES SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ITS REALLY SICKENING AND FASCINATING AT THE SAME TIME.

TO BE CONTINUED IN BLACK MEN MAN UP AND PULL YOUR PANTS UP WHILE YOU’RE AT IT PT.2
