Welcome to THEJNSREPORT’S: Bill Cosby: The Fall Of An Icon
Where to begin? I could go back to child hood days of watching Fat Albert & Friends and the Cosby Show, after all that is where Bill Cosby entered into most of our consciousness growing up in the 80’s.
Cosby captured our hearts and minds first with his cartoon show and then his sitcom The Cosby Show a “middle class” black family with a two parent household consisting of a father who was a doctor and a mother who was a lawyer raising 5 kids in Brooklyn.
For many of us black kids growing up in single parent household this was the paradigm we all wished we had and lived. The appeal of the show, his charisma and comedic genius crossed over all cultural lines and made him the icon he was.
How did it come to be that such a cultural phenomenon and inspiration to so many could end up the example of the worst possible scum around? Previously, my support of Cosby was because of a blind disbelief that it was any way possible without any evidence pointing to his guilt other than accusations and public opinion that he could be guilty of the claims so many women were making against him.
All faith in his innocence has since been completely stripped from my mind as the revelations came out that he had previously admitted to drugging and essentially raping women in the past. In his own words Bill Cosby has identified himself as a cunning, deceitful, low life predator, and serial rapist.
Cosby joins Darren Sharper as a disgusting deviant repeat sexual offender. His power and money (which so many felt would put them in the spot light as opportunists and liars) gave him a “cloak of invisibility” if not invincibilty. What is there left to say other than don’t put your faith in celebrities and athletes. Human beings are deeply flawed and all we can do is try to inspire others to do the right thing. Own up to our mistakes and teach the youth that what they see on TV isn’t reality.
It’s sad that such a brilliant career and public image is now destroyed not by anyone’s doing other than his own. Cosby’s lasting legacy now will be that of a sickly looking lying rapist who will probably spend his last days on earth under a filthy shroud who will hopefully pass ignominiously without us having to see or hear from him.
If there was a way to make Cosby accountable to all these women for his egregious and heinous behavior over the decades past I hope that it comes to pass. Lastly, I owe a huge apology to the women who initially came forward and whom I didn’t believe at first. Kudos to you all for having had the courage and the resolve to come forward and to say it doesn’t matter how much money, how much power, how much influence a person has.
The truth is the truth and needs no defense.
